Dental Laboratory Technician

Summary This position is located in the Dental Service, Marion VA Medical Center. The position performs the full range of the most complex procedure in support of dental professionals and the Veteran population. Duties ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Major duties and responsibilities include: Constructing routine full and partial dentures, dental splints and obturators, model work for fixed prostheses and other laboratory products to support the treatment needs of staff dentists. Functioning include pouring primary and final impressions; fabricating custom trays; fabricating bite rims; mounting casts on articulators. Setting teeth for trial dentures/partials; investing, packing, processing and finishing dentures/partials. Polishing prosthesis following adjustment; fabricating night guards; fabricating provisional prostheses; repairing broken prostheses. Adding teeth to prostheses; pouring and pinning final crown and bridge impressions; sectioning dies; fabricating fluoride trays. Fabricating stints; fabricating transitional partials, managing implant fabrication process and fabricating wrought wire clasps. Waxes, invests, casts, and finishes cast crown and bridges and metal substructures for porcelain crowns and bridges; stacking and firing ceramics on porcelain crowns and bridges. Knowledge of oral anatomy, tooth morphology and dentition. Involved in complex removable and fixed oral-maxillofacial appliances including fixed, semi-fixed, or removable cases, partial and complete dentures when the severe nature of the dental abnormalities to be overcome require working to unusually close tolerances, resolving particularly difficult problems of retention, balance, reducing tension on natural teeth and tissue, and similar problems. Performing other duties as assigned. Qualifications IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR THIS POSITION AT THE GS-9 LEVEL YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING: ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. ~AND~ SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must possess 1 year of specialized experience, equivalent to the next lower level in the Federal service, that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of the position and that is typically in or related to this Dental Laboratory Technician position to be filled. Specialized experience for the position includes using dental laboratory material such as impression materials, plasters, stones, hydrocolloids, waxes, metals, acrylics, porcelain, and similar materials; using laboratory equipment such as hand tools, dental lathes, engines, and hand pieces, furnaces, casting machines, presses, flasks, and related equipment; using precision instruments such as articulators, surveyors, and microanalyzers; constructing dental prosthetic appliances; fabricating complex oral-maxillofacial appliance including partial and full dentures, dental splints and obturators, model work for fixed prostheses and other laboratory products. (THIS EXPERIENCE MUST BE SUPPORTED BY YOUR RESUME TO BE CREDITABLE.) ~OR~ EDUCATION SUBSTITUTION: You must have successfully completed two full years of graduate education or a master's degree that is directly related to the work of this position as a Dental Lab Technician. NOTE TO APPLICANTS: One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent one year of full-time study; if that number cannot be obtained from the transcript, 18 semester hours will be considered as one full academic year of graduate study.
