Summary

- This is a bargaining unit position.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain a U.S. Passport.
- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- This is a Mission Essential position. You will be required to ensure organization or facility continuity of operations and/or completion of tasks that are considered essential to the mission designated by a local or command decision.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
Qualifications
GS-11: In addition to the Basic Requirements (see Education section), your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector:
- Experience comprehending and interpreting complex technical, scientific and engineering data, publications, etc. related to Health Physics and Radiation Health programs.
- Experience independently managing records, developing procedures, investigating and documenting anomalies, and advising on radiological issues and/or programs.
- Experience preparing reports, conducting analyses, and ensuring environmental compliance.
- Experience performing complex functions and calculations to determine the actual or anticipated consequences of radiological emergencies and executing appropriate action to minimize the magnitude of the occurrence.
GS-09: In addition to the Basic Requirements (see Education section), your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector:

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
Education
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
A. Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.
SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE: Applicants may substitute the following education for the required experience, provided it demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position:
GS-11: 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
GS-09: 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree.
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be combined to meet the total qualification requirements. If you are using education to meet all or part of the qualification requirements, you must submit a copy of your transcripts or an itemized list of college courses which includes equivalent information from the transcript (course title, semester/quarter hours, and grade/degree earned) in your resume.

This announcement uses the Defense Industrial Base, Major Range and Test Facilities direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to certain positions in the competitive service.
Incumbent may be assigned to work areas where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present. These agents may include, but are not limited to, fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals. Incumbent is responsible for following and enforcing all established safety rules and requirements, staying informed of all safety and health requirements pertinent to his/her work assignments, ensuring all applicable safety equipment is available for task assignment, and taking prompt corrective action to abate hazardous workplace conditions.
The work is performed in an office environment as well as in the field. Trips to ships, dry docks, facilities, etc., require wearing of safety shoes, safety glasses, and a hardhat. Earplugs are required under certain conditions.
The incumbent may be required to work overtime, rotate shifts, work weekends/holidays, and to work odd shifts and odd work-weeks (e.g., Tuesday through Saturday or Sunday through Thursday). to support maintenance and work operations on the Shipyard, as well as off-yard travel to support mission operations.
