Summary
About the Position: This position is located within Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC) in the Department of Pathology, Honolulu, Hawaii.
Tripler Army Medical Center is a tobacco-free workplace. Tobacco products include, but are not limited to, smoking, smokeless tobacco, an delectronic nicotine delivery devices.

Duties
Identifies, accessions, fixes and processes all tissue specimens received by the laboratory and as necessary performs gross examination of selected specimen types.
Ensure proper handling, processing, and safeguarding of human tissue specimens,
Performs specialized diagnostic immunohistochemistry procedures by applying broad knowledge of complex principles, techniques, and methodologies
Operates and troubleshoots automated immunohistochemical analyzers.
Processes and prepares special surgical specimens for study by a pathologist.
Displays skill and proficiency in performing all aspects of microtomy and slide preparation for routine histology, immunohistology and specimen sectioning and collection for genetic studies.
Accepts and releases bodies from the morgue maintaining all necessary documentation required. Utilizes Vyleater and assists with disposal of tissue for pick up with environmental services for disposal.
Performs a full range of duties involved in special processing and staining of all tissue types including skin, bone, nerve, brain and lymph nodes.

This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health /ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position
The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs. Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted.
This position has been designated "Mission Essential".
This position has a requirement to lift up to 40 lbs
This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.
This position requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Hours between 6-4:40, early shift is 6-2:30, late shift is 8-4:30, possible rotating shift Possible on-call for the weekends
Employees assigned to a medical treatment facility are required to be screened for applicable immunizations or pre-existing immunity based on occupational risk, regardless of job series.
This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is subject to annual vaccination.
A Histopathology Technician certification is preferable but not required.
Appointment to this position is subject to a background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the Education/ and or Experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes collecting surgical and autopsy slides or specimens; maintaining catalogue record of all specimens from autopsies; preparing machines for specimen testing; and performing a variety of autopsy and gross surgical material procedures.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-06).

Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as pathology, biochemistry, and molecular biology, histology, immunohistochemistry, and special staining techniques.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.
Education
FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university. Additional information
Male applicants born after December 31, 1959 must complete a Pre-Employment Certification Statement for Selective Service Registration.
