Plumber

Summary This position is located within the National Capital Parks -East in Suitland, Maryland. The primary purpose of the position is to service all plumbing systems within the park. Duties The major duties of the Plumber position include, but are not limited to, the following: Performs preventive maintenance to all plumbing and mechanical equipment and parts. Installs, modifies, and repairs plumbing fixtures (bathtubs, showers, toilets, sinks, water fountains, and their associated hardware. Cleans gravity type sewage drain lines, repairs or replaces potable water lines, and makes connections Installs and makes repairs to sewer drain systems (these include septic tanks, drain fields, sewage lift pumps, and related piping Installs, repairs, and performs preventive maintenance to heating and cooling systems Packs valve stems, services check valves, flanges, altitude valves, gauges, and all pumping equipment used in water systems. Requirements Conditions of employment U.S. Citizenship required. Appointment subject to background investigation and favorable adjudication. Meet Selective Service Registration Act requirement for males. Selectee will be required to participate in the Direct Deposit Electronics Funds Transfer Program. You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, overtime and shift work. You may be required to complete training and obtain/maintain a government charge card with travel and/or purchase authority. You may be required to travel overnight away from home up to 2 nights per month. You must obtain a government charge card for travel purposes. As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated. This probationary period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service. In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider: your performance and conduct; the needs and interests of the agency; whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service. You must be able to lift, at minimum, 50 pounds. The position is considered essential during emergency situation. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties; a valid driver's license is required. You will be required to submit a Motor Vehicle Operator's License and Driving Record. You must also submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that disclose all valid driver's licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you. QUALIFICATIONS To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT) Troubleshooting Technical Practices Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, Repair, etc. Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (includes blueprint reading). Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment Use of Measuring Instruments Condition of Employment (SCREEN OUT): At the time of appointment, the incumbent of this position must possess and be able to maintain a valid State or District of Columbia Driver's License. Physical Demands: Incumbent makes repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms in hard-to-reach places. Often works in excavated holes in water and mud. Subjected to odors and irritants. Requires considerable standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing, and working in uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries, and sets up equipment that may exceed 50 pounds. Working Conditions: Work is done inside and outside in dirty, greasy areas. May work in all types of weather conditions, including long periods of exposure to hot sun and bad weather, such as rain, snow and/or high winds. Incumbent is exposed to dirt, dust, spray and fumes; possible bites of poisonous and nonpoisonous insects; and broken bones, cuts, bruises, etc. Must have or be able to obtain a State driver's license. The National Park Service has determined that the duties of this position are NOT suitable for telework.
