Summary Employee will be assigned to Voluntary Service, VA Medical Center, Lebanon, PA, serving as a Recreation Assistant for assigned patient care program(s). Duties ***THIS IS NOT A VIRTUAL POSITION, YOU MUST LIVE WITHIN OR BE WILLING TO RELOCATE WITHIN A COMMUTABLE DISTANCE OF THE DUTY LOCATION*** Duties include, but may not be limited to the following: Develops and implements programs after receiving approval from the Coordinator, Therapeutic Recreation Services or designee. Carries out a full range of Therapeutic Recreation Services inclusive of recreation therapeutic modalities and general recreation (diversional) activities. These interventions include both the clinical and community setting and address the assessed needs of the patients, utilizing appropriate motivational and leadership approaches. Works with patients who have a variety of illnesses, diseases and/or disabling conditions with varying degrees of impairment. Implements general recreation (diversional) activities to achieve goals as identified on the "Continuum of Goal-directed Therapeutic Recreation Interventions". Develops specific activities and routines to maintain or improve patient's general state of physical and/or mental health based on the therapeutic recreation assessment completed by the Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist/Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS/TRS). Supervises on-station and off-station general (diversional) activity programs for various types of disabilities (i.e., mental health diagnoses, dementia, head injury, patients with multiple diagnoses, etc.). Strives to improve the patient's overall mental and physical health, enhance wellbeing and maintain the highest degree of self-help and independence within limitations of a patient's disability. Collaborates with professional CTRS/RTS to select, adapt, and/or adjust recreation therapy modalities in accordance with treatment goals. Records patient participation in electronic recording system. Supervises and assists with activities sponsored by volunteer groups for the service and completes any forms as necessary and appropriate. Schedules and publicizes recreation activities, ensuring maximum effectiveness in attracting and motivating participants and in providing the widest possible range of activities in terms of interests and needs. Requests funds for purchases. Sets up the recreational area in preparation of the activity and provides area supervision and instruction as needed. Maintains all recreational equipment in a safe working condition, requesting repairs when indicated and reporting possible safety hazards in keeping with VA regulations. Performs other related duties as required. Work Schedule: Monday, Wednesday - Friday: 8:00a.m. - 4:30p.m. and Tuesday: 11:00a.m. - 7:30p.m. with occasional weekends, evenings, and holidays. Qualifications ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Applicants must possess one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-5 grade level in the Federal Service. Specialized experience includes: Group leader, counselor, or similar work in public and private recreation programs for adults or children such as summer camps, local playgrounds, YWCA and YMCA clubs, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, urban community centers, or resort recreational activities; Teacher's aid in elementary school recreation or physical education program, with emphasis on development of general recreational skills and abilities; Aid or assistant assignments in recreation while on active military service; Aid or assistant in the organization and administration of recreation activities, such as preparing activities calendars, maintaining attendance records, and providing information concerning schedules and activities; Summer aid in a State or national park, with duties related to the recreational activities of visitors to campsites, trails, picnic areas, nature and raft centers, and boating and fishing areas (e.g., demonstrating camping techniques and park safety, conducting nature tours, and overseeing farm animal areas provided for children); Sales or stock clerk in a recreation supplies and equipment shop; Aid or assistant in the issuance of authorized property, and in the maintenance of inventory control and accountability for such property in a recreation facility; Aid or assistant in a hotel or resort recreation service, with duties such as setting up areas for games, tournaments, and other organized group recreational activities. NOTE: Appropriate credit will be given for voluntary participation in community, social service, and similar activities related to the work of the position. OR SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (Transcript Required): Successful completion of six (6) months of graduate education directly related to the work of the position meets the requirements for GS-6. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. OR COMBINING EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (Transcript Required): Combination of successfully completed graduate education and experience may be used to meet total qualification requirements. DRIVERS LICENSE: Employee must hold a valid driver's license in order to operate a government vehicle as part of official duties. NOTE: We cannot accept photographs; therefore, please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. You will be rated on the following Competencies as part of the assessment questionnaire for this position: Clinical Data Collection/Documentation Communication Patient Care Technical Competence IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Requirements: The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as extended periods of standing or walking for prolonged periods of time and over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; frequent bending, crouching, reaching, stooping, and stretching or similar activities to set up and take apart equipment and apparatus; recurring lifting of moderately heavy items such as bowling and sports equipment and repositioning patients; and pushing or pulling heavy objects. The work may require specific physical characteristics and abilities such as above-average agility and dexterity to perform intricate therapeutic procedures. Must be able to push wheelchair patients on level and inclined ground and physically able to drive the station vehicles and complete all requirements for operating a government vehicle.
