Assistant Carpenter/Metal Worker

The Assistant Carpenter/Metal Worker is responsible for assisting the Carpenter/Metal Worker in maintaining open spaces and public amenities, including metal and wood structures such as railings, playground equipment and benches in a safe and operable throughout Battery Park City. The Assistant Carpenter/Metal Worker should be aware of sustainable practices and take proactive steps towards applying these practices in their daily work. Essential Duties: • Assist in the carpentry and metal work to maintain metal and wood structures • Assist in the preventative and reactive repair and replacement of the public playground equipment and components to a safe and operable state • Assist in daily tasks, short-term and long-term projects, and preventative and reactive maintenance repairs and replacements; continue work tasks in the leads’ absence • Perform carpentry and metal work, e.g., welding, sandblasting, painting, measuring, installing, and repairing • Collaborate with other staff and contractors as needed • Assist with research, ordering parts and materials; manage work orders • Assist with inventory management of commonly used supplies, tools, and parts • Work closely with other Parks Operations staff and BPCA departments to assist with public educational activities such as tours, volunteer groups, and public and programmed events • Assist in creating and updating records and Standard Operating Procedures • Safely and effectively operate equipment, e.g., vehicles, hand tools, power equipment and safety equipment • Maintain a high standard for safety by timely and safely cautioning off sites for workplace and public safety, • Use personal proactive equipment and adhere to all safety rules and regulations • Identify and report park issues and hazards appropriately and timely • Perform emergency and non-emergency work as assigned such as work related to programmed and permitted events, job specific issues, and severe weather events, e.g., snow and ice removal and flood protection measure as directed • Maintain professionalism including when interacting with the public • Perform other duties as assigned Education and Experience: • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in carpentry and/or metal work field • High School Diploma or GED • Valid U.S. Driver’s License • OSHA 10, certifications, higher education, and/or training on relevant skills preferred • FDNY Certificate of Fitness A35, G98 and G60 preferred • Experience working in public settings and knowledge of sustainability practices preferred Competencies: • Detail oriented • Problem solving skills • Conflict resolution skills • Collaborative Skills: • Knowledge of carpentry and/or metal work tasks and up to date knowledge of applicable codes and regulations • Ability to operate tools necessary to perform tasks • Excellent verbal and written communication skills • Good judgement and decision-making skills • Ability to interact well with staff at all levels of the organization • Ability to learn new skills and maintain up to date information on relevant skills and techniques • Ability to read blueprints, plans and schematics • Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite Physical Requirements: • Must be able to work outdoors and in all types of weather • Stand, sit, and squat for long periods of time • Perform repetitive movements • Push, pull, and lift up to 50 lbs.
