PTR Baler and Compactor (PTR), a division of Komar Industries, is a world leader in the waste equipment industry. The company manufactures and services balers, compactors, and provides parts and resources to customers.
PTR is seeking a hands-on,Automation and Tooling Engineerto lead the design, integration, and optimization of robotic and automation systems within our manufacturing operations. This role requires a strong understanding of automation technologies (e.g., welding and paint robots) and a solid foundation in designing tooling and fixtures used in robotic applications. The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between process design, tooling development, and shop floor implementation. This position will report to the Weld Engineering Process Manager
Responsibilities:
• Lead programming, commissioning, and troubleshooting of robotic systems, including Welding robots and Paint robots.
• Experience with robotic simulation software
• integrate robot-controller-to-PLC communication protocols.
• Utilize SolidWorks or AutoCAD for 3D modeling and design of tooling components.
• Design custom fixtures, jigs, clamps, and End of Arm Tooling-EOAT for welding or robotic applications.
• Implement lean manufacturing principles to optimize tooling usage and reduce waste.
• Provide training and support for operators on the proper use of tooling equipment.
• Lead small- to mid-size projects from concept through implementation, including vendor coordination, budgeting, and risk management.
• Read and interpret schematics and blueprints to ensure accurate fabrication of tools.
• Conduct testing and validation of new tooling designs to ensure reliability and performance.
Qualifications:
• Minimum 3 years of experience working with industrial automation systems in a manufacturing environment.
• 7 years engineering, or industrial engineering experience (including tooling), preferred.
• Deep understanding of welding processes (MIG, TIG, spot welding), part tolerancing, heat-affected zones, and weld sequencing.
• Ability to read blueprints, schematics, and engineering drawings.
• Knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing) and its application in fixture alignment and precision tooling
• Proficient in 3D CAD software: SolidWorks, Autodesk and or Inventor
• Experience with hydraulics/pneumatics, welding/fabrication.
• Proven track record in programming, commissioning, and troubleshooting robotic systems.
• Familiarity with industrial painting processes, including robotic spray pattern programming, masking, and coating thickness requirements.
• Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, 5S, Poka-Yoke, and process FMEA.
• Strong organizational skills to manage BOMs, 2D/3D drawing sets, tooling lists, and standard work documents.
• Skilled in conducting design reviews and root cause analysis (RCA).
Physical Requirements:
• Must be able to lift 35 pounds at a time.
• Physically capable of kneeling, reaching, stooping, standing, pulling, or pushing.
• Work environment is in open warehouse/garage where temperatures vary with the weather.
