Job Description
About Us
This position would be a part of a growing POLITICO tech team whose responsibility is creating the best policy and news platform on the market. You'd be making an immediate impact in contributing to a suite of products that connects the dots between breaking news and taking action, and empowers thousands of users to make informed decisions.
The tech team itself is a group of supportive and versatile engineers, data analysts, designers, and project managers. While many of us have a particular domain expertise, we are big proponents of the axiom that the "best idea in the room wins." Whether you are a code expert or a policy wonk, being a member of our team means having the opportunity to learn and make an impact in a wide variety of ways -- and to see your ideas make a real impact on the products we build.
The Consumer team is responsible for building features and supporting the Politico.com website and the Content Management System (CMS) used by Politico's editorial staff to publish content to all of Politico's product lines (Politico, Politico Pro, E&E News and AgencyIQ).
About You
We are seeking a highly-skilled Software Engineer to join our Back End (BE) Consumer engineering team. This position would be responsible for building and maintaining modern web applications that serve a diverse array of users: both consumer facing apps as well as our flagship subscription-based service. A successful candidate will be comfortable working as a member of an Agile team, and in taking ownership of the release cycle for a variety of different products. Additionally, being conversant and familiar with a micro-service ecosystem and the use of technologies such as AWS, Kafka, Docker, Kubernetes and automated build/deploy tools (Gradle, Bamboo, Jenkins) would be a huge plus - as our ideal candidate would not only make an impact using our tools but help push the boundaries of what we are capable of.
What You'll Do
The first month: You'll get onboarded to the team, learn the ins-and-outs of our architecture, and have the chance to start diving into our codebase.
The first six months: You'll gain a greater understanding of our technical stack, contribute daily to production code and participate in decisions that have a real impact on our day-to-day jobs and our end users.
The first year: You'll start to take ownership of release management, build out new products, and find opportunities to improve our processes - all of which make a difference to our team and our users.
A Few More Details
We are looking for candidates that can not only write clean, readable code that is easy to maintain. Our team uses Java as our primary backend language, and some other primary qualifications that align with this role include:
- Experience with Java/SpringBoot
- Experience with AWS/Cloud Technologies
- Experience with relational database design, SQL, and Views
- Writing automated unit and integration tests
- The ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with a variety of stakeholders including product managers, QA, and UX/UI designers
- Contributing substantively in engineering tasks like the peer review process, documentation writing, and debugging broken code
- The ability to work independently from requirements to create desirable solutions, and to take ownership of challenging engineering tasks from start to finish
- Experience participating in on-call rotations
Bonus
- Experience in Media or Publishing and working with Editorial teams
- Experience with high traffic websites and Content Delivery Networks (CDN)
- A working knowledge of micro-service architecture, and tools such as Kafka, Docker, and Kubernetes
- Any experience working with Brightspot CMS or Dari is a great bonus.
