Job Description
The Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is seeking a cardiologist specializing in advanced heart failure and heart transplantation to serve as Director of the Transplant Center at the Nashville Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) and as a Heart Failure and Heart Transplant cardiologist at both the Nashville VAMC and VUMC.
The Transplant Center at the Nashville VAMC is the largest within the Veterans Health Administration. It includes Heart, Kidney, Liver, and Stem Cell Transplant programs and receives referrals from across the United States. The Director will provide strategic and operational leadership for the center, with responsibility for clinical operations, finances, regulatory compliance, and coordination with national VHA leadership and the Vanderbilt transplant enterprise. Heart transplants and ventricular assist device surgeries are performed at VUMC, with veterans receiving pre- and post-operative care at the Nashville VAMC. The Nashville VA Heart Transplant Program is the busiest in the VHA, performing nearly 30 heart transplants annually and accounting for over 50% of all VHA heart transplants nationwide. The Kidney and Liver Transplant programs each perform approximately 40 transplants annually. The Stem Cell Transplant program performed over 100 transplants in the past year, and the center offers a robust CAR T-cell therapy program.
The appointee will hold a dual appointment at the Nashville VAMC and VUMC with an associated Vanderbilt faculty rank. The Vanderbilt Heart Transplant Program is the busiest in the world, performing over 200 transplants in 2025, driven by innovative strategies including the use of hepatitis C-positive donors, DCD organs, aggressive donor utilization, and shortened regional wait times. The Vanderbilt heart failure and transplant team includes 21 faculty members with expertise in advanced heart failure and transplantation, spanning four inpatient services and comprehensive outpatient transplant and VAD clinics. Subspecialty programs include adult congenital heart disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, amyloidosis, and cardiac sarcoidosis.
The incumbent will have clinical responsibilities in both inpatient and outpatient settings at the Nashville VAMC and VUMC. The successful candidate must demonstrate excellence in clinical care, teaching, and administrative leadership. Faculty rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Research experience and scholarly interest are encouraged.
