Job Description
General Role and Responsibilities:
To help maintain the physical school plant in a condition of operating excellence so that the full educational use of it may be made at all times.
Specific responsibilities in this position:
Other duties may be assigned.
β’ Performs rough and/or finish carpentry work
β’ Account for material and labor relative to assignments.
β’ Maintains all safety and code requirements according to OSHA, State, local, and Board of Education mandates
β’ Performs general carpentry maintenance work inside and outside the physical plant on doors, windows, floor and ceiling tile, carpeting
β’ Changes or repairs locks, rekeys doors and lockers
β’ Recommends supplies and equipment for purchase and maintains the inventory of district-owned hand tools, equipment, hardware, materials and supplies.
Specific Skills and Knowledge for this position:
β’ Install and/or repair classroom boards: chalkboards, bulletin, marker boards, whiteboards, smart boards, interior and exterior signs
β’ Install, assemble, and/or build cabinetry including bookshelves and countertops
β’ Install and/or repair ceilings including suspended ceilings, replace all ceiling tiles
β’ Build forms for concrete work
β’ Repair and assemble office, classroom, and learning center furniture including shelves, tables, chairs, and desks
β’ Install and repair all interior and exterior doors and door lock mechanisms and hardware
β’ Install and repair all VCT tile, carpet tiles, ceramic, and rubber floors including gym floors
β’ Build and install handicapped accessible ramps, handrails, restroom partitions to meet ADA compliance
β’ Install and repair window coverings such as drapes and blinds, roll shades.
β’ Install and repair restroom partitions, soap, paper towel, toilet paper dispensers, and mirrors
β’ Remodel offices and classrooms- Hang drywall and suspended ceilings
β’ Weld all metalwork including bleachers, desks, chairs, cafeteria equipment; Make welding repairs as needed on heavy equipment
β’ Repair window frames and associated hardware including hinges and closers
β’ Repair playground equipment; Installation of replacement equipment as needed
β’ Repair indoor and outdoor bleachers
β’ Repair swimming pool deck and lining, coordinate associated repairs with other trades
β’ Install and repair student lockers
β’ Repair and install gym and athletic equipment
β’ Install countertops, cabinets
β’ Repair and install press boxes
β’ Maintain and install fire safety doors and hardware
β’ Build and repair storage sheds and garages as needed
β’ Hang pictures, posters, banners on walls, and plaques.
β’ Maintain safety data sheets on all chemical products used in the department
β’ Flagpole Repair
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
β’ High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
β’ Journeyman's card for carpentry
β’ Member of Carpenterβs Union
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MATHEMATICAL/ESTIMATING SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid driver's license with good driving record.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Ability to pass a district written and physical test. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Ability to apply concepts of environmental and energy (cost savings) management to the scope of work within the department. Keeps skills updated by reading publications common to the carpentry trade. Knowledge of ADA; CAD and AutoCAD skills are desirable.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms such as to operate vibrating machinery including saws and sanders. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on to tall ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as building materials. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 lbs such bulk furniture, heavy tool cabinets or boxes, lift heavy doors or scaffolding. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, scaffolds, and cabinets. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works indoors and outdoors in very hot or very cold environments. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, sprays, paints, finishes, glues, and non household dust while performing the duties of the job. Odors may be noxious and will require use of personal protective equipment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally will work in a loud area.
