About the Role
We are seeking an experiencedCarpenter Journeypersonto join our team at the Jacksonville shipyard. This position plays a vital role in supporting ship repair and modernization by constructing, installing, repairing, and fabricating wooden structures to protect ship equipment, outfit drydocks with docking blocks, and complete outfitting tasks in accordance with specifications and drawings.
This is a hands-on position requiring six (6) years of related carpentry experience and the ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities
• Interpret and work from drawings, blueprints, job specs, manuals, and change orders.
• Construct, repair, install, and fabricate wood and composite structures for ship protection and drydock outfitting.
• Operate Carpenter Shop equipment, portable power tools, and hand tools safely and effectively.
• Work with both US standard and metric measurements.
• Provide quality work and Objective Quality Evidence (OQE) as required.
• Keep work area clean and safe; follow OSHA and shipyard safety practices at all times.
• Complete daily assignments on schedule and assist in unexpected work requirements.
Qualifications
• High school diploma, GED, or vocational school degree.
• Minimum6 years of marine or industrial carpentry experience.
• Thorough understanding of marine carpentry, joiner, and drydock blocking operations.
• Proficiency in blueprint reading, layout, cutting, and fabrication.
• Ability to lift 50–100 lbs, work in confined spaces, climb ladders/scaffolding, and operate in all weather conditions.
• Must be able to wear and maintain all required PPE (hard hat, safety glasses, steel toes, respirator, etc.).
• Strong communication skills to read, interpret, and complete reports such as Condition Found Reports (CFRs).
• DBIDS required (must qualify for base access).
Work Environment
• Indoor and outdoor shipyard environment.
• Exposure to heat, humidity, cold, wind, loud noise, and heavy equipment.
• Work performed in tight, confined areas and at elevated heights.
