Position Summary

The Clinical Nurse in the Surgery/ENT division provides proficient nursing care to a diverse group of otolaryngology patients, many of whom present with complex and less predictable conditions. This role also includes leadership responsibilities in implementing and maintaining high standards of nursing care across clinical settings.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to carry out each duty satisfactorily. Additional responsibilities may be assigned.

Clinical Responsibilities (based on assignment):

  • Utilize advanced nursing knowledge and the nursing process to:
    • Assess a patient’s physical, psychosocial, and cultural background.
    • Identify relevant health problems and external support systems.
    • Define a nursing problem list informed by medical diagnosis and assessment.
    • Set realistic, measurable goals related to each problem.
    • Develop a care plan targeting resolution and prevention of nursing issues.
    • Evaluate and document patient progress.
    • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to implement a comprehensive care plan.
  • Provide individualized nursing care to optimize patient engagement in their own care.
  • Revise the care plan in collaboration with physicians as necessary.
  • Deliver patient education tailored to individual healthcare needs.
  • Assist physicians in routine patient care:
    • Take patient histories and assess visit reasons.
    • Assist with procedures and treatments.
    • Provide patient education as needed.
  • Maintain clear and accurate nursing documentation.

Leadership Responsibilities:

  • Plan, implement, and evaluate nursing care.
  • Identify and correct deviations from department policies/procedures.
  • Evaluate patient needs and clinical requirements.
  • Serve as a role model in professionalism and clinical conduct.
  • Support precepting and procedural training under the nurse manager’s direction.
  • Maintain accountability for the quality of care provided and tasks delegated.
  • Uphold all ethical and legal standards in accordance with hospital and nursing guidelines.
  • Incorporate evidence-based research into nursing practice.

Other Duties

  • Serve as a telephone triage nurse (as assigned for ENT patient population):
    • Assess patient needs and prioritize calls.
    • Provide advice or direct in-office support.
    • Schedule appointments and coordinate referrals.
    • Redirect calls appropriately and work collaboratively with support staff.
  • Maintain professional development:
    • Earn continuing education credits.
    • Set professional growth goals with nursing leadership.
    • Participate in departmental meetings.

Minimum Qualifications

Education

  • Current D.C. Registered Nurse (RN) licensure or proof of application and active out-of-state licensure required.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing preferred; associate degree or diploma in Nursing accepted.

Experience

  • Previous procedural or surgical nursing experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequent walking, bending, twisting, and overhead reaching.
  • Ability to occasionally lift or carry, and frequently push or pull up to 20 lbs.
  • Regular exposure to healthcare environments requiring PPE.
  • Manual dexterity for computer and office equipment operation.
