Computational Mechanics Intern - Summer 2023

Job Summary 

Kairos Power is seeking highly motivated early career individuals to join the Modeling and Simulation team in Summer 2023 to support the development of numerical models and analysis methods for Hermes’ metallic and graphite structures, systems and components (SSCs). Contributions will be instrumental to Kairos Power’ mission on delivering an innovative technology that will impact climate change.

Responsibilities

• Support the implementation of models and numerical methods into Finite-Element Analysis (FEA) software
• Support the calibration, verification & validation (V&V) and uncertainty quantification (UQ) efforts for Kairos structural graphite and metallic material models
• Support the development of new design-by-analysis methodologies for stress and failure analysis of metallic and graphite SSCs by collecting, processing, and analyzing large data sets obtained from numerical simulations and experimental campaigns
• Perform structural analysis of metallic and graphite SSCs using Finite-Element Analysis
• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

• Current student pursuing Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in Mechanical, Nuclear or Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Applied Mathematics, or similar discipline
• Strong knowledge of Finite Element Methods and other spatial and time discretization techniques for partial differential equation (PDE) systems
• Experience in the development of scientific codes and software using C++, Fortran, Python or similar programming languages is required
• Demonstrated experience with meeting deadlines, working in a team, cross-functional collaboration, and ability to remain flexible amidst frequent changes
• Proven team player with excellent verbal, written communication/presentation, and interpersonal skills
• Entrepreneurial, flexible, open to new ideas, collaborative
• Knowledge of inelastic deformation and failure mechanisms of quasi-brittle and/or metallic structural components operating at high temperature and/or under irradiation
• Experience in the development of user-defined material subroutines in Ansys and/or Abaqus
• Working knowledge of data management programming languages (e.g., SQL) and/or programming language for statistical computing (e.g., R)
• Ability to work with highly collaborative team and proven team player working with various teams
• Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently
• Prioritizes and ensures safety of one self and others
• Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge
• Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges and issues

The hourly range for this position is $28-$32 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters or $25-$29 for remote employees working in California.
