The San Diego Center for the Blind (SDCB) is seeking a dynamic, mission-driven leader to serve as our Controller.This is a unique opportunity for an experienced professional who is passionate about making a meaningful difference in the lives of individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Job Summary/General Duties: The Controller is responsible for overseeing all financial and operational business functions of the San Diego Center for the Blind (SDCB), including accounting, budgeting, audit preparation, compliance, payroll, and benefits. This role ensures sound fiscal management, internal controls, and alignment with GAAP standards. In addition to serving as a key member of the leadership team, the Controller contributes to strategic planning, HR administration, and nonprofit funding compliance. The Controller attends board meetings to present financial reports and support long-term fiscal sustainability. Accounting & Financial Reporting • Oversee all day-to-day accounting functions • Responsible for billing and quarterly reporting to: Department of Rehabilitation • Prepare accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and projections. • Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, and SDCB’s internal controls and accounting procedures. • Manage all income and disbursements, maintaining complete supporting documentation. • Process and track restricted funds, petty cash, and grant-related revenues. • Acts as liaison with custodial banks, and investment managers. • Reconciles investment balances to custodial bank statements. • Prepares and disburses sales tax payment calculations and files quarterly sales tax with California Department of Tax and Fee Administration Budgeting & Forecasting • Develop and manage the annual operating budget. • Perform regular budget-to-actual analysis with variance reporting to the CEO and Board. • Track expenditures to ensure compliance with funder and internal guidelines. • Conduct cash flow projections and propose strategic cost-saving or revenue-generating measures. Audit, Tax, & Compliance • Prepare documentation and schedules for annual audits and IRS Form 990 filings. • File sales tax, business property statements, 1099s, and welfare exemption claims. • Maintain awareness of regulatory changes impacting nonprofit accounting and operations. Contract & Grant Management • Oversee financial reporting for Department of Rehabilitation, OIB, YIB, and other contracts. • Prepare grant budgets, renewals, and supporting documents. • Assist in maintaining updated contracts and insurance policies for all organizational needs. Payroll & Benefits Administration • Process semi-monthly payroll and maintain accurate payroll records. • Track PTO, sick leave, and wage garnishments. • Coordinate onboarding, benefits enrollment, and insurance renewals. Human Resources Support • Facilitates employee onboarding, orientation, and general HR inquiries. • Assists in cultivating a constructive and positive work environment and is available to address employee-related concerns. • Maintain personnel records and HR compliance documentation. • Manages the SIMPLE IRA plan; calculates contributions, performs semi-monthly audits, disburses funds to the various financial institutions. • Represent SDCB in unemployment claims and workplace investigations as needed. Banking & Investments • Reconcile monthly bank and investment accounts. • Manage inter-account transfers and ensure banking compliance. • Report investment activity to the CEO and Board. Additional Responsibilities • Coordinate insurance renewals (general liability, property, D&O, etc.). • Oversee inventory and financial recordkeeping for the Technology Center and Store • Assists in the maintenance and update of SDCB contracts.
