Controller / Senior Accountant – Real Estate Development & Construction

About Us: We are a San Diego–based real estate development and construction company specializing in multifamily apartment projects. We own and operate multiple properties and handle ground-up construction in-house. Our tax preparation is handled by CBIZ, and we have two full-time bookkeepers in place. We need a high-level accountant who can bridge the gap between daily bookkeeping and tax-ready financials. Role Overview: This position will take ownership of reviewing, correcting, and finalizing our monthly financials so that CBIZ receives accurate and complete information. You will oversee our existing bookkeepers, implement stronger accounting controls, and ensure all transactions — especially construction-related and investor/loan activities — are recorded correctly. Key Responsibilities: • Review and reconcile monthly balance sheets, income statements, and general ledger activity. • Oversee bookkeepers’ work to ensure accuracy and proper coding. • Handle complex accounting entries, including: • Hard money loans, construction draws, and interest accruals. • Investor capital contributions and distributions. • Progress billing, retainage, and cost allocations for construction projects. • Maintain accurate job-costing reports for multiple active projects. • Prepare clean, reconciled financial statements for CBIZ each month. • Coordinate with CBIZ on quarterly reviews and year-end close. • Implement process improvements for accounting accuracy and efficiency. Qualifications: • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred but not required). • Minimum 5 years’ experience in accounting for construction and/or real estate development. • Proficient in Excel, QuickBooks, AppFolio, or similar accounting software (Sage Construction knowledge a plus). • Strong understanding of GAAP, construction job costing, and real estate accounting. • Detail-oriented with excellent organizational and communication skills. • Ability to work independently and proactively solve problems.
