Job Description

Position Summary The Automation Engineering team is seeking a Controls and Automation Engineer to design, develop, and maintain control systems software and hardware for drilling operations. This role supports both new development and ongoing enhancements of automation technologies, focusing on efficiency, reliability, and integration with advanced drilling equipment. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of control system engineering principles, industrial communication protocols, and hands-on experience with PLCs, HMIs, and Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs). They will work on innovative projects involving drilling automation, third-party integrations, and real-time advisory systems. Key Responsibilities • Design and develop control algorithms, PLC programs, HMI interfaces, and system architecture for industrial automation. • Implement industrial communication protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Profibus, Profinet, CANBUS, and OPC UA. • Translate functional requirements into scalable system designs; create loop, block, and network diagrams. • Collaborate on drilling automation applications, including tasks like pipe handling, tripping, and reaming. • Support integration of third-party systems such as battery energy storage and managed pressure drilling. • Generate technical documentation including system architecture diagrams, operations manuals, and revision histories. • Oversee equipment procurement, installation, and commissioning for hardware/software deployments. • Coordinate with engineering, HSE, field crews, and third-party vendors on automation rollouts and troubleshooting. • Provide Tier-3 support for field issues related to PLCs, HMIs, and control system hardware/software. • Adhere to structured software change management protocols, including documentation and version control. Requirements General Requirements (All Levels): • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Mechatronics, or Controls Engineering (or related field). • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). • Ability to work in both office and field environments, including drilling rig locations. • Physical ability to lift 50 lbs, navigate uneven surfaces, wear PPE, and travel as required. Controls and Automation Engineer (Mid-Level): • 3+ years of experience in PLC programming and HMI development. • Experience with Omron or Siemens PLC platforms. • Working knowledge of ladder logic, structured text, SFC, and related programming languages. • Experience with industrial communication protocols and VFD integration. • Familiarity with HMI platforms like Wonderware, WinCC, or Ignition. Senior Controls and Automation Engineer: • 7+ years of hands-on PLC programming experience. • Expertise in PLC platforms (e.g., Siemens, Omron). • Advanced skills in HMI development and real-time control systems. • Experience developing automation for drilling or similar heavy industrial environments. • Exposure to battery management systems and multi-developer environments. Preferred Qualifications • Experience with structured software development processes. • Familiarity with automation equipment used in drilling or oilfield applications. • Hands-on experience with EtherCAT, OPC UA, or CANBUS-based integrations. • Demonstrated ability to work in Agile or collaborative development teams.
