Position Overview: Under the supervision of the VP of Programs, the Janitor is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and welcoming environment for children, staff, and visitors in the after-school program facility. This position ensures compliance with NYC Department of Health (DOH), and organizational safety standards.
Essential Job Functions
Facility Cleaning & Upkeep
• Sweep, mop, vacuum, and disinfect classrooms, hallways, restrooms, offices, and common areas daily.
• Clean and sanitize high-touch surfaces (doorknobs, railings, tables, chairs) regularly to maintain a healthy environment for children.
• Empty trash, recycling, and compost bins; ensure proper disposal according to NYC sanitation guidelines.
• Restock soap, paper towels, toilet paper, and other supplies in restrooms and program spaces.
Wash windows, glass doors, and mirrors as needed.
Health & Safety
• Use cleaning products safely and according to DOH/DOE guidelines (no bleach or toxic chemicals near children’s areas unless approved).
• Immediately report unsafe conditions (broken furniture, spills, pests, leaks, etc.) to the Program Director or Facilities Manager.
• Assist in ensuring compliance with fire, safety, and health inspections.
• Follow all organizational protocols related to child-safe environments (e.g., cleaning when children are not present in certain areas).
Program Support
• Set up and break down spaces for daily activities, special events, and meals/snacks as directed.
• Assist with deliveries, moving supplies, and furniture when needed.
• Support maintenance of outdoor play areas, ensuring they remain clean and free of hazards.
Team & Communication
• Work collaboratively with program staff to minimize disruption to classroom activities.
• Communicate supply needs and maintenance issues in a timely manner.
• Participate in staff trainings on safety, cleaning standards, and emergency response when required.
• Other duties as assigned
Work Environment
• This is a high-risk position involving routine use of power tools, heavy lifting, and exposure to mechanical hazards. Compliance with OSHA safety protocols and PPE use is mandatory. This position requires:
• Regular physical labor, lifting, machinery use, sharp tools and/or outdoor work
• Frequent exposure to chemicals or pathogens when cleaning employee and student restrooms
Requires full use of PPE and strict safety compliance
Required Knowledge, Skill and Experience
Previous janitorial, custodial, or building maintenance experience preferred (school or childcare setting a plus
OSHA certification
High School Diploma/GED with one year relevant
Some electrical and/or plumbing experience
Ability to work around youth
Ability to stand 75% of the shift
Ability to lift and move moderate to heavy objects (minimum 50lbs)
COMPENSATION:
Commensurate with the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate. The hourly rate for this position is $16.50 – $25.00 per hour.
