DESCOvery Associate

The D. E. Shaw group (DESCO) seeks an entrepreneurial and highly motivated individual to join its venture studio group, DESCOvery. DESCOvery ideates, researches, and builds out innovative, technology-oriented businesses and ventures in areas such as fintech, insurtech, and data. WHAT YOU'LL DO DAY-TO-DAY:

You will be a key contributor and member of an entrepreneurial team that sources, evaluates, researches, and supports the building and commercialization of new start-up businesses. This is a valuable opportunity to gain early-day start-up experience and skills along with the resources of DESCO’s larger platform. The work involves hands-on experience in multiple start-up efforts in the early stages of idea generation and business building. You will work closely with senior team members to perform diligence and refine and incubate ideas; for promising ideas that pass the incubation phase, you will help recruit management teams to execute them and will support companies through the life cycle of a start-up to build high-value businesses. While the role is a full-time, permanent position with DESCO, we’d also be open to individuals interested in moving to and taking on permanent leadership roles within the start-ups following their creation.

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

• Candidates should have a bachelor’s or advanced degree in computer science, an excellent record of academic and professional achievement, and two to four years of work experience.
• We’re looking for ambitious, creative, entrepreneurial-minded individuals with superb teamwork capabilities and impressive critical thinking, analytical, execution, and communication skills.
• Experience at start-ups is a substantial plus—especially in product management—but we also welcome candidates with backgrounds in management consulting, corporate development, or strategy at high-growth companies and venture capital firms.
• The expected annual base salary for this position is $125,000 to $200,000. Our compensation and benefits package includes substantial variable compensation in the form of a year-end bonus, guaranteed in the first year of hire, a relocation bonus, and benefits including medical and prescription drug coverage, 401k contribution matching, wellness reimbursement, family building benefits, and a charitable gift match program.
