After driving 100X revenue growth as early employees and head of marketing at Gusto, Mutiny founders (Jaleh and Nikhil) realized they could turn their custom engineering and data science work into a no-code platform that every company could use to grow significantly faster. Backed by Sequoia, YC, and CMOs of companies such as Snowflake, Airbnb, Carta, and AngelList, Mutiny is used by some of the fastest growing companies including Notion, Brex, Carta, Segment, Algolia, and Qualtrics. The company has 35 employees, $4.2M in ARR and growing at 4X annually, projected to hit $15M ARR and 105 employees in 12 months.

The role

We are looking for a seasoned design leader to envision the future of Mutiny, and in turn, the future of growth. This is a leadership role that will report to the Head of Product, managing product design, research, creative, and brand. We have built a product customers love and use to drive nearly 2x more revenue from their website. This year we are expanding the product into new areas and solving even more problems for our customers. Here’s what you would do in the next 18 months:

  • Build a world-class design team to expand our product line with a unified and delightful UX, from experience creation to analytics and AI guidance
  • Establish an unreasonably high bar for design quality — aesthetic and experiential
  • Articulate an inspiring vision through design and storytelling in partnership with product
  • Create a design system that is extensible and will scale across new channels
  • Help build a design-led culture at Mutiny — where design is a strategic area of differentiation

We currently have 2 product managers and 1 product designer. You will scale the design team to 5+ in the next 18 months. The team would grow at a similar rate the following year.  

Ideal profile

Experience: 

  • Built a strong team of product designers and ideally researchers and brand designers
  • Managed the transition of a product from a single feature to a platform with many capabilities, unifying the UX and information architecture
  • Built products where data/analytics, and ideally machine learning, was a big part of the product experience
  • Familiarity with how to integrate machine learning capabilities into designs
  • Created design systems from scratch
  • Experience in both B2B (ideally spent time on growth) and B2C
  • Worked at high growth startup (Series A-D)

The three most important things:

  • A strong bottoms up people leader who can hire top talent and guide them to execute at the highest level
  • Unreasonably high bar for visual and experience design
  • A master of simplifying and creating systems (not just organizing them)

  • Pragmatic innovator who has their feet on the ground and head in the sky
  • Low ego leader who places the team ahead of themselves
  • Player coach who is unafraid to get their hands dirty (bring it on Figma)
  • Systems thinker who understands how each design choice influences the larger whole
  • Values “full stack design” — the connection between brand, marketing, product, typography, and color
  • In the top 5% of design leaders at a startup (<500 employees). They’re likely an L6 with 3-5 direct reports, and one of the fastest rising design leads at the company.
  • Worked on a product with great UX / design and in a design culture that prides itself on care and innovation.
  • Your super power is simplification. You can take disparate inputs with no structure to create a product experience that customers truly love. 

A little more color on the profile: 

  • As an IC, you were known for being hands on, talking to a lot of customers, quickly synthesizing their needs, and developing novel solutions that delighted customers in unexpected ways. You contributed to product strategy as much (if not more) than the product managers. Your ability to inspire through storytelling and distill experiences down to what matters most propelled you into leadership ahead of your peers. You have inspiring design mentors and have spent the past few years learning how to hire, build and motivate a great design organization. You’re now ready to take the helm at a company with a strong market/vision and product-market fit.
