Development Engineer System and Board Design (f/m/x)

Introduction
1300 employees make IBM’s Research & Development laboratory in Böblingen Germany the largest European facility in IBM’s global network of development laboratories.
The hardware development team with about 200 engineers works on central components for IBM servers of the POWER IBM Z and Quantum computer families. These provide the safest and most reliable base infrastructure for cloud computing machine learning AI big data analytics technical computing and countless online transactions in the IT industry.
The hardware development takes place in an international work environment with our partner laboratories in the USA Israel and India. Our mission is the development of the most powerful server systems in the world. Naturally we are continuously working on optimizing our development process. Methods like Agile as well as Design Thinking are part of our daily business.

Your Role and Responsibilities
Your job: System- and Board Design

We are hiring development engineers (m/f/x) for our System- and Board Design team from January 1st 2025. Our electronic packaging team designs the high-end main boards as well as various other PCB cards for the IBM mainframe (System Z) IBM Power Systems and IBM Quantum Systems). The diverse tasks of the electronic packaging team include:

• Logic Design: Digital and analog design of complex cards and boards
• Physical Design: Layout of complex cards and boards
• Signal Integrity: Modeling and simulation of high frequency signals across boards and systems. Includes definition of design rules and material requirements
• Power Integrity: Modeling and simulation of power distribution and switching stability requirement across complex boards
• Module Design: Design of single and multichip modules for IBM processors
• Automation: Continuous development and improvement of existing processes workflows measurement methods and design tools
• Failure analysis: Hardware bring up prototype verification and field return error analysis

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

• Masters degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering Computer Engineering Computer Science Physics or similar
• Knowledge in electrical design topics (signal integrity and power integrity)
• Knowledge in digital and analog circuit design
• Knowledge in PCB card design technologies and materials
• Programming skills (preferably in Python)
• Experience with PCB design tools (Cadence Synopsys Mentor Graphics Altium Eagle etc.)
• Strong intrinsic motivation
• Strong team player and open minded to work in an international team
• Strong communication skills in English and preferably in German
