The Opportunity
DAT is seeking a Director, Data Science to join our Data Science team in Denver, CO; Beaverton, OR; remote.
NOTE: If remote based, this position will require travel to one or both offices monthly.
Candidate Profile
As the Director of Data Science at DAT you will play a pivotal role in leading the research and engineering teams to deliver cutting-edge data-driven solutions, driving product innovation, and ensuring seamless collaboration across departments to achieve strategic objectives.
The Data Science team at DAT builds machine learning and analytical tools to integrate into DAT products across all the companies' product lines. As the Director of Data Science, you will work closely with our engineering, product management, and business intelligence colleagues on a wide variety of projects, including forecasting, recommendation systems, search, anomaly detection, historical benchmarking, and many others.
The Data Science (DS) team's work directly contributes to the development of new products, enhancements to existing products, and new internal tools, such as decision support and advanced business intelligence products.
What You’ll Do
As the Director of Data Science, you will oversee the data science engineering team responsible for building, designing, and maintaining systems which:
- Lead the training, replicable and reliable integration of new models, and add them to our growing catalog of models.
- Evaluate past models against new data and make data-driven improvements.
- Host models as microservice APIs for consumption by other internal engineering teams.
- Apply models in large overnight batch jobs to output data into S3 and/or Database tables.
- Build and maintain a library of common code tools to support data scientists in both research and engineering roles.
- Your role as the Director involves providing strategic direction and leadership to the team. You will organize and prioritize engineering tasks and deliverables, and ensure that changes, releases, and timelines are effectively communicated to all stakeholders, including other data science team members, engineers, and product managers.
Key Responsibilities:
- Collaborate closely with other data science research and engineering managers and leads to coordinate work across the broader Data Science family of teams and ensure efficient research hand-offs.
- Ensure the quality and reliability of all existing ML engineering products through rigorous testing, evaluation, and monitoring.
- Organize the team’s day-to-day and week-to-week tasks, providing early and frequent timeline estimates and communicating clear project updates to senior and executive leadership teams.
- Establish and maintain the DS Engineering team’s on-call schedule and culture, ensuring a balanced workload for all team members.
- Liaise with downstream stakeholders to effectively communicate project updates and changes.
- Identify and recommend new tools and technologies to enhance the team's capabilities and efficiency.
- Foster a culture of continuous learning and development by providing team members with education and professional support opportunities.
- Mentor and guide team members in all areas of Data Science, including research acumen, engineering best practices, applications of research to business needs, and professional communication.
The Skills and Experience You’ll Need
- Requires a minimum of 8-10 years of related experience with a PhD (Preferred) or Master’s degree in relevant field (e.g. Statistics, Computer Science, Mathematics)
- At least 5 years of management experience in data science, or an analytical research field using the same tools and platforms.
- Proficiency in cloud-based data science tools to lead the team in using those platforms and capabilities, coaching team members to utilize available cloud resources for most use cases.
- Professional Python developer with the ability to review and mentor other researchers in Python best practices within the realm of data sciences.
- Strong knowledge of cloud-based data science tools and the capability to design new cloud-native ML systems to power our products.
- Experience using and writing Infrastructure-as-Code, especially Terraform for AWS.
- Proven track record in delivering machine learning models and model outputs as business products.
- Experience delivering machine learning products or research results that are used and relied upon by other engineering or business teams.
- Proficient in various industry-standard machine learning, forecasting, and statistical techniques.
- Experience in freight and logistics industry is a plus.
For Colorado-based candidates, in compliance with Colorado's Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, the minimum salary for this role is $200,000.00 + benefits. The maximum compensation for this role can vary significantly depending on your job-related skills and experience. DAT considers factors such as scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education and training, core skills, internal equity, and market and business elements when extending an offer.
