Job Summary
Responsible for supervising and directing nursing care in all clinical areas of the facility according to its policies, procedures, philosophy, and objectives. Coordinates and directs patient care and related activities according to accepted standards. Oversees patient scheduling in all clinical areas. Analyzes and evaluates nursing care to improve quality of care given. Works closely with administrative and medical staff in coordinating patient-care service functions. May assume responsibilities for administrator in his/her absence.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Philosophy

2. General
• Participates in facility committees, meetings, in-services, and activities.
• Shares input regarding short- and long-term goals of the facility.
• Maintains facility and equipment to ensure cleanliness, sterility, and operational ability.
• Recommends new or different items based on facility needs and trends.
• Reports deficiencies in contracted services (e.g., pathology, radiology, housekeeping).
3. Communication
• Communicates effectively and professionally with patients, visitors, physicians, and coworkers.
• Interacts in a positive, respectful, and considerate manner.
• Promotes effective communication among clinical areas, business office, and physician practices.
4. Financial Practices
• Promotes cost containment and efficient use of resources.
• Analyzes clinical areas for cost-effective improvements.
• Monitors FTE utilization and recommends ways to reduce man-hour costs.
• Assists with capital and operating budget development.
• Makes purchasing suggestions within budget allowances.
5. Compliance Program
• Assists in implementing and maintaining the organization’s compliance program.
• Performs duties according to established compliance policies and procedures.
6. Performance-Improvement Program
• Implements and maintains performance-improvement policies and procedures.
• Serves on the performance-improvement committee.
• Evaluates suggestions, grievances, and processes to improve performance.
• Monitors patient-care programs, outcome standards, and criteria.
• Analyzes data and prepares reports for evaluation.
• Contributes to performance-improvement and identifies roles upon administrator’s request.
7. Safety/Risk Management Program
• Adheres to safety policies and procedures.
• Implements practices to provide safety in the healthcare environment.
• Monitors physical environment and maintains safety, comfort, cleanliness, and order.
• Works with safety officer to resolve violations or hazards.
• Responds to emergency situations competently.
• Submits information to risk manager for reports.
• Ensures OSHA requirements are met and supplies are available.
• Maintains safe working environment (temperature, humidity, ventilation, lighting).
8. Professional Competence
• Participates in continuing education and shares knowledge with staff.
• Maintains membership in professional organizations.
• Welcomes new learning experiences and challenging opportunities.
• Provides input for staff orientation and continuing education.
9. Patient Care
• Applies accepted nursing principles to patient care.
• Coordinates care with surgeons and anesthesia providers.
• Identifies and solves nursing-related problems.
• Oversees nursing activities to ensure patient needs are met.
• Enforces standards and accreditation rules.
• Revises patient-care policies as needed.
• Respects patients’ rights to privacy, dignity, and confidentiality.
• Supervises operating room care to ensure sterility and readiness.
• Controls patient/staff traffic to prevent infection.
10. Daily Operations
• Coordinates and monitors operations for efficiency and quality.
• Prepares staffing schedules, personnel assignments, and delegates duties.
• Cross-trains clinical staff and creates a positive work environment.
• Reviews attendance sheets and maintains logs.
• Evaluates staff performance and provides feedback.
• Counsels employees and recommends salary adjustments, promotions, or terminations.
• Chairs or participates on committees.
• Serves as liaison between patients, families, nursing, and medical staff.
11. Materials Management
• Applies material-management principles and procedures.
• Promotes cost-effectiveness and prevents waste.
• Monitors cleaning of equipment and working conditions.
• Reviews inventory for availability of necessary supplies.
• Initiates requisitions and orders new products.
• Oversees inventory and ensures economical use.
• Verifies documentation (purchase orders, logs, etc.) is complete.
Responsibility for Assets
• Responsible for equipment, medical-supply inventory, manuals, documentation, and employee files.
Qualifications
• Cooperative work attitude toward coworkers, management, patients, visitors, and physicians.
• Ability to promote favorable facility image with physicians, patients, insurance companies, and general public.
• Ability to make decisions and solve problems.
Required:
• High school graduate or GED.
• Graduate of accredited school of nursing.
• RN with active license in New Jersey.
• CPR certification.
• Healthcare management experience.
• Evidence of leadership qualities.
• Strong ethical and moral character references.
• Proficient English (written, interpersonal, and telephone communication).
Preferred:
• ACLS certification.
• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Nursing.
• Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC) experience.
• Computer literacy.
Physical/Mental Requirements
• Ability to walk, sit, and stand for long periods.
• Visual and auditory acuity for frequent use of equipment.
• Capability for overhead/low reaching and occasional lifting.
• Physical strength to meet patient-care demands.
• Ability to move quickly in response to patient needs.
• Ability to make judgments in routine and emergency situations.
