Primary Location:1100 N Congress Ave. Austin, TX 78701 Position Type :Full-time position,40 hours per week, Monday โ€“ Friday 8:00 AM โ€“ 5:00 P.M. Position requires on-call periods after regular business hours, including evenings, weekends and holidays, especially during legislative session. Hiring Rate:$52,000.08 - $60,000.00 annually Salary Plan:A-20 Job Class (Code):Electrician III (9806) Posting Dates:October 10, 2025 โ€“ until closed Organizational Overview:The State Preservation Board (SPB) was established for the purpose of preserving, maintaining, and restoring the State Capitol and the 1857 General Land Office, which houses the Capitol Visitors Center. Since that time, Agency operations have expanded to include care of the Governor's Mansion, operating the Bullock Texas State History Museum, Texas State Cemetery, Capitol Mall and three Capitol Complex legislative office buildings. We provide educational programs centered on Texas history, government and culture. These services benefit the citizens of Texas and its visitors. Position Summary:In this role, the individual performs advanced (senior-level) work in the maintenance and repair of electrical equipment and circuits. Work involves installing, replacing, and maintaining electrical systems, apparatus, components of machinery, and equipment. May assign and supervise the work of others. Works under limited supervision with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Work may performed at all agency maintained properties, including in legislative offices and historic spaces. The Electrician III position works as part of a team that has a service company approach to building maintenance. This position is not sedentary in nature and requires considerable physical and mental exertion, organization and planning. May be exposed to inclement or harsh weather conditions due to the scope and nature of job duties. Must consistently display sound judgment, and portray a friendly, calm, professional, respectful, positive demeanor and service-oriented focus when interacting with visitors, staff and the public. Performs all other duties as assigned. Must be able to work extended hours in order to be considered. References will be required to verify experience and must be able to pass a thorough criminal background check.*Must be able to work with agency's 365 day-per-year schedule and may include weekends, evenings and holidays, including working on short notice. If an individual is qualified to perform the essential job duties, the individual must be able to perform the essential job duties with or without reasonable accommodation. ยท Install and repair electrical systems, apparatus, and electrical components of machinery and equipment. ยท Coordinate and perform inspections and tests, and troubleshoots electrical equipment, lighting, and power circuits and systems using test instruments. Identifies defects and ensures compliance with codes. ยท Isolate defects in wiring, circuit breakers, fuses, switches, sockets, and other elements and replaces faulty switches, circuit breakers, fuses, sockets, and other elements of electrical systems. ยท Develop plans and specifications of the layout of electrical wiring to ensure compliance with specifications and electrical codes. ยท Mount motors, VFD drives, transformers, and lighting fixtures into position and completes circuits. ยท Diagnose and repair complex electrical circuits feeding lighting, building, and mechanical equipment. ยท Diagnose and repair problems with magnetic motor starters and remote start-stop stations; operates and maintains high and low-voltage switches; and installs rigid, thin wall, and flexible conduit. ยท Wire circuits and cleans and tightens low voltage switch gears. ยท Work with medium voltage switchgear on building main electrical feeds. ยท Work with microprocessor controlled lighting systems including programming and troubleshooting hardware/software problems. ยท Perform preventive maintenance and renovation of electrical service and historical/non historical electrical lighting fixtures including cleaning, re-lamping and changing ballasts. ยท Work with event holders on the Capitol Grounds to provide electrical services. ยท Works with legislators' offices and Governor's staff. Maintain confidentiality of work related information. ยท Satisfactorily, promptly completes monthly safety and other required trainings. ยท Works the on-call rotation, overtime, weekend, holiday, and evening work as required. ยท Responds to after hour's calls needing immediate attention and to emergency situations. ยท May assign, train, coordinate, and lead staff. May coordinate and supervise the work of contractors. ยท Promotes visitor safety and building security. Assists with building evacuation if necessary. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: ยท Knowledge of basic electron theory, how electricity travels, AC and DC currents; single phase and three phase circuits; and series and parallel circuits; and Ohms Law, troubleshoots basic electrical circuits. Reads basic wiring diagrams, and uses multi-meters to read voltage, current and resistance values. ยท Ability to plan work with safety and security front of mind. Complies with all applicable safety rules, regulations, standards and emergency procedures including applicable OSHA, agency, local, state, and federal security and safety rules, regulations, and established industry safety and security techniques and standards. ยท Skill in reading basic wiring diagrams, schematics, and accurately recognizing color coded conductors. ยท Knowledge of building automation systems and experience changing temperature in different areas of a building using a computer or laptop. ยท Ability to work as an integral part of the Facilities team to meet the demands of competing work orders, priorities, and special projects. ยท Knowledge of using a computer to perform routine administrative tasks including work orders and order parts using purchasing system. ยท Ability to be flexible and perform all duties in a manner that promotes public confidence in the SPB and its staff. ยท Ability to communicate verbally and in writing on a variety of complex issues; and ability to identify and direct effective solutions and outcomes. ยท Ability to apply sound judgment and maintain a professional, respectful, and service-oriented focus when interacting with other employees, visitors and the public. ยท Ability to independently prioritize, multi-task and effectively delegate work; visually inspect and examine buildings and equipment; report details in need of repair and restoration. ยท Ability to walk throughout the Capitol Complex, climb, pull, lift up to 60 pounds, stand for extended periods of time, push, stretch, stoop, kneel, recline, bend, squat, and reach. ยท Ability to work in conditions with some exposure to temperature extremes, damp, wet, heat, cold, moisture, humidity and inclement weather. ยท The position is mentally and physically demanding and requires the ability to perform hands-on facilities and general maintenance duties. ยท Ability to use and skill to manipulate equipment that may require fine motor skills coordination and eye-hand coordination. ยท Ability to drive legally in the State of Texas, and maintain personal insurance while driving agency vehicles. ยท Ability to maintain regular attendance, which is an essential job duty for all SPB positions. ยท Ability to work varying schedules and on-call periods based on business needs, including some nights and weekends. ยท Ability to pass a thorough criminal background check. Required Education and Experience: ยท High school graduate (or equivalent). ยท Five years experience in the operation, maintenance, and repair of electrical equipment. ยท Current electrical journeyman's license. ยท Experience in satisfactory customer service, handling service calls. ยท Experience in working with a team, must be a proven team player with a service company approach to building maintenance. ยท Basic computer experience in a Windows environment, to use the work order system and communicate using email. ยท Must have a current drivers license and safe driving record. Preferred Education and Experience: ยท Current master electrician license. ยท Advanced computer skills. ยท Experience with facility maintenance and building operations. ยท Supervisory or lead experience. ยท Experience scheduling, coordinating and conducting multiple concurrent projects. ยท Advanced knowledge of safety regulations, including involvement with a safety committee.
