Engineer I/Engineer II - Propulsion

We're seeking an action-oriented engineer with intellectual curiosity who is excited to put their potential to use. Experience as a Propulsion Engineer specifically is desired, however any with engineering experience in any of the propulsion system lifecycle phases are encouraged to apply. These phases can include: specification definition; subsystem interface definition; conceptual design; detailed design; component development and/or procurement; assembly; testing; verification; launch preparations and on-orbit operations.
What You'll Do:
  • Participate in the development of innovative propulsion solutions and architectures.
  • Work in a team environment assisting in a variety of propulsion system design phases.
  • Support efforts to allow for accommodation of new and/or refinement of existing propulsion systems including propulsion system/component sizing, requirement development and allocation, performance analyses, design tasks, integration, test, verification, launch and flight operations
  • Write, review, update, and execute test procedures and scripts.
  • Use test and measurement equipment to test and troubleshoot spaceflight hardware.
  • Over time, gain a detailed understanding of all aspects of propulsion subsystem analysis, design, build and test.
  • Support propulsion activities during space vehicle launch and commissioning campaigns.
  • Prepare technical documentation and give presentations to peers, management, and external customers and partners.
  • Collaborate with system and subsystem engineers, mission assurance, technicians, and other program personnel.
  • Maintain a regular and predictable work schedule.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships within the department, the Strategic Business Units, Strategic Capabilities Units and the Company. Interact appropriately with others in order to maintain a positive and productive work environment.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

What You'll Need:
  • Engineer I - BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 2 or more years related experience.
  • Engineer II - BS degree or higher in Engineering or a related technical field is required plus 5 or more years related experience.
  • Each higher-level degree, i.e., Master's Degree or Ph.D., may substitute for two years of experience. Related technical experience may be considered in lieu of education. Degree must be from a university, college, or school which is accredited by an agency recognized by the US Secretary of Education, US Department of Education.
  • Degree in Aerospace Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, manufacturing Engineering or Physics preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership and team building skills is desired.
  • Excellent attention to detail while appreciating the bigger picture of the complex and ambitious projects that we take on at Ball.
  • A desire to work all aspects of propulsion subsystem design, build and test including hands-on with critical space-flight hardware.
  • Candidate should have good interpersonal skills the ability to contribute to the success of small teams through excellent teamwork.
  • Good writing and presentation skills with experience communicating to senior decision-makers and technical audiences.
  • Effective in small teamwork environment with broad responsibilities and minimal oversight.
  • A desire to learn - our culture fosters intellectual curiosity in a highly collaborative environment.
  • Customer Relationships: Knowledge/experience working with customers and matching needs with cost and schedule requirements.
  • Top candidates will be goal oriented individuals with excellent organizational skills, a team mindset, and capable of coming up to speed quickly on assigned programs.
  • Experience designing and/or testing a variety of in-space propulsion systems preferred.
  • Familiarity with AFSPCMAN 91-710 and other Range Safety documentation and requirements preferred.
  • Experience with any/all industry propulsion analytical tools is highly desirable (AFT Impulse/Fathom, DSMC, Python, C/C++, MATLAB).

On-Site Work Environment: This position requires regular in-person engagement by working on-site five days each normally scheduled week in the primary work location. Travel and local commute between Ball campuses and other possible non-Ball locations may be required.
Working Conditions:

  • Work is performed in an office, laboratory, production floor, or cleanroom, outdoors or remote research environment.
  • May occasionally work in production work centers where use of protective equipment and gear is required.
  • May access other facilities in various weather conditions.

A current DoD clearance and/or SCI access with Polygraph is not required to be eligible for this position, however applicant must be willing and eligible for submission within 60-90 days after an offer is accepted and must be able to maintain the applicable clearance/access. Compensation & Benefits:
  • HIRING SALARY RANGE FOR ENGINEER I: $88,500 - $109,500 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
  • HIRING SALARY RANGE FOR ENGINEER II: $108,000 - $133,500 (Salary to be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of the applicant, internal equity, and alignment with market data.)
