The Role

Analyzes, researches and develops structural engineering specifications involving metals, non-metallic or composite structural materials for product design, or operation of product to include structures, mechanical, hydraulic, electrical and electronics, power plant, armament, heating and ventilating, equipment and maintenance designs. Analyzes damage tolerance, durability, design allowables and structural modeling. Specific structural engineering specialties may include dynamics and loads, stability and stress fatigue and thermal analysis. Tools utilized may include CATIA, IDEAS, ProEngineer and a variety of software applications.

General knowledge and utilization of the following software/applications:

FEMAP, Abaqus, Teamcenter, Hypermesh, and MatLab. Ability to learn operate older government provided software, i.e. FORTRAN.

Must Have

Bachelor's Degree and 2 years of relevant exempt experience;

Master's Degree and 0 year of relevant professional experience

Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.

The Submarine Engineering Advanced Capabilities team is looking for an Engineer Structural 2 to take part in the development of the next generation Fast-Attack Submarine Program, SSN(X). This is an opportunity to join our growing team to contribute and influence the Navy's future, premier attack submarine.

The ideal candidate would have the following:

  • General knowledge of submarine requirements in engineering and design of deck structures, foundations, and platform arrangements.
  • The ability to apply technical principles, theories, and concepts, in the field of structural design and analysis with some guidance from senior engineers, SMEs and supervisor.
  • The ability to work in a collaborative environment integrating the many ship systems at the structural interfaces, with teams of engineers and designers of varying disciplines.
  • Good communication and technical writing skills.
  • The ability to multitask; selected engineer can be assigned several projects to support fiscal year Navy studies and NNS IR&D.
  • The ability to create and present to NNS senior leadership, Navy, government technical warrant holders and SMEs.
