Engineering Student Assistant - Structure Construction - Technician/Field Work (Glendale, CA)

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), is seeking to hire a Student Assistant, under close supervision by a Senior Bridge Engineer (Supervisor), in a learning capacity, to perform engineering related duties resulting in experience and training in various technical field and office tasks relating to construction of transportation structures. Conditions of Employment This is a part-time, temporary, non-benefited, student position. Employment in all positions with University Enterprises, Inc. is dependent upon the mutual consent of University Enterprises, Inc. and the employee. Prerequisites Must be a college student attending classes during the regular term (fall, spring, and winter, if applicable), at one of the accredited colleges or universities on our affiliation list. Students declared major must match the major(s) listed in the job posting. Majors/Fields of Study Engineering Work Schedule F lexible workdays and work hours, Monday – Friday, between 8 AM – 5 PM. Final work schedule will be determined by the supervisor. Additional Work Schedule Student Assistant and Graduate Assistant employees generally work up to 24 hours per workweek (Sunday – Saturday) during the academic year and up to 40 hours per workweek during breaks; (winter, spring, and summer). Compensation $18.28 - $28.16 per hour Minimum Qualifications • The Student Assistant must have knowledge of: • The principles of algebra and geometry, including their application to engineering. • Drafting procedures and equipment. • The English language at a level equivalent to that learned in a 12th grade curriculum. • The Student Assistant must have the ability to: • Understand general engineering concepts. • Make accurate mathematical calculations. • Learn bridge building and building construction vocabulary, sequences, and methods and computer applications used in transportation engineering work. • Learn methods of designing, proportioning and sampling Portland Cement Concrete. • Learn to evaluate work methods and traffic conditions closely to assure safety. • Must possess a valid California driver’s license. • Meet and deal tactfully with a variety of people with different backgrounds, experience and attitudes. • Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA. • Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term. • Responsibility for Decisions/Consequences of Error:The Student Assistant works under close supervision and performs a variety of tasks as a learner. Consequences of error is minimal and would only result in a learning experience for the Student Assistant because all work is reviewed before being finalized. • Preferred Qualifications • Willingness, as a learner, to do routine or detailed work in order to learn practical techniques. • Job assignments may be subject to rotation, geographical transfer, changes of shift, work hours and work days, field work and travel.Under the amendment to Government Code Section 18220, state agencies shall give preference to a qualified applicant (up to 26 years of age) who is, or has been, a dependent child in foster care, a homeless youth, a formerly incarcerated youth, or a victim of human trafficking. • Duties and Responsibilities • In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist with making inspections for enforcing compliance with plans and specifications; inspecting work as to the quantity, quality, and methodology; recording manpower and equipment usage along with pertinent details; preparing documentation of the work performed. • In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist with drafting, preparing contract pay estimates and other documents and reports involved in construction projects.In a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist in reviewing and approving submittals and working drawings, preparation of contract plans, profiles, cross sections, details; determining quantities, including making fundamental mathematical calculations; performance of minor surveys. • Physical Requirements Sit for extended periods; frequently stand and walk; manual dexterity and hand-eye coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; verbal communication; use of office equipment including computer workstations, telephones, calculators, copiers, printers, and scanners with or without reasonable accommodation. Working Conditions Work is performed in an office or in a field environment. Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, and uneven terrain.
