Job Description
About Us
This position would be a part of a growing POLITICO tech team whose responsibility is creating the best policy and news platform on the market. You'd be making an immediate impact in contributing to projects such as PoliticoPro, our subscription-based product, and writing code that would be utilized by thousands of site visitors every day.
The tech team itself is a group of supportive and versatile engineers, data analysts, designers, project managers, and QA analysts. While many of us have particular domain expertise, we are big proponents of the axiom that the "best idea in the room wins." Whether you are a code expert or a policy wonk, being a member of our team means having the opportunity to learn and make an impact in a wide variety of ways, and to see your ideas make a real impact on the products we build.
About You
As a Frontend engineer, you'll be asked to contribute to an array of codebases primarily using Javascript, HTML, and CSS. Specifically, our team uses Vue.js (https://vuejs.org/) but we are looking for any candidate that has a strong grasp of writing clean, maintainable, and well-tested code.
But just as importantly, you'll be asked to collaborate with a small but close-knit team of engineers: providing feedback on pull requests, contributing to team discussions on code style, making process improvements to the way we do things, and being a compassionate and thoughtful colleague. Have you used any animation libraries that you can't wait to share? Is there a linting rule that we should incorporate into our codebase? We'd love a candidate that can disagree respectfully, articulate their point through code and conversation, and provide a new way of seeing our work.
What You'll Do
The first month: You'll get onboarded to the team and have the chance to make your first codebase contribution, and see it live on production.
The first six months: You'll gain a greater understanding of our technical stack, and participate in decisions that have a real impact on our day-to-day jobs and our end users - from changing the layout of a UI to improving our engineering workflow.
The first year: You'll have identified and taken ownership of specific engineering problems - be it page tracking, front end testing, or writing cleaner animations - that make a demonstrable difference to our team and the company at large.
A Few More Details
Finally
A successful frontend engineer at POLITICO exhibits empathy for their colleagues, a willingness to admit the edges of their knowledge, and a tenacity for solving the root of the problem rather than the symptoms.
