  • Mechanical Engineering

  • Product & Industrial Design

  • Computer Science

  • Electronics Engineering

  • Robotics & Mechatronics

We’re looking for the brightest new graduates with the right attitude to thrive in our unique and creative culture. We need self-starters, people who are motivated and drive themselves forward and are unafraid of taking on large and complex challenges. You will have autonomy and freedom to excel and will be supported to deliver exceptional work.

Our interest in a board range of engineering disciplines reflects our belief that having a healthy diversity in people, skills and perspective is crucial to our success. If you believe you can bring something to this diverse space, please still apply.

About the role

You will be embedded in the Upstream Robotics team which is future facing and focussed on developing and maturing field of robot concepts (think 5+ years away) and opportunities to the point of having working prototypes. This requires both research and engineering across multiple fields and why we value a board range of skills and have expertise in:

  • Mechanics

  • Electronics

  • Product Design

  • Software Development

  • Computer Vision

  • Machine Learning

  • Control Systems

  • Motion Planning

This breadth of disciplines offers Graduates the opportunity to explore and gain both exposure and experience across many facets of robotics which will help build a solid foundation of knowledge upon which to build their career.

Key responsibilities:

  • Understanding project requirements and taking ownership of work and direction.

  • Work in cross-discipline teams to rapidly explore and prototype new robotic concepts from either a hardware or software perspective, depending on your core skills.

  • Engage in practical and pragmatic engineering to solve real-world robotics problems.

  • Document, report and present your work both verbally and in writing to your peers within the team and to others within the company.

  • You need to be self-driven when it comes to developing and learning new skills.

About you

We are looking for creative, autonomous problem solvers who are self-motivated and passionate about robots and more importantly keen to apply and hone their skills to the challenge of building next generation robotics systems. Because robotics is such a diverse field, we are open to people with a broad range of backgrounds and interests.

Your current skill set will initially steer where you begin in the team and will serve as a foundation upon which you start to forge your career in robotics and grow your skill set. Our goal is to offer our graduates a diverse and varied set of experiences that helps them develop into capable engineers who are well equipped to tackle the range of challenges involved in producing cutting-edge robots.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate two or three of core, foundational competencies listed below, ideally via portfolio of recent work, and show how they have applied them to create novel and innovative solutions to real-world problems.

  • Hands on Making – Show that you can quickly build prototypes from available materials to explore and demonstrate concepts. This can range from using cardboard models & mechanical mock-ups to producing refined visual mock-ups. You will ideally have experience with being in a workshop environment.

  • Rapid Prototyping using CAD/CAM - Understanding of parametric modelling and best practises with CAD and experience of rapid prototyping techniques (e.g., FDM, SLA, SLS printing).

  • Design Thinking – Understanding of design thinking practises and how they can be applied to Product Design & Engineering.

  • Software Engineering – Experience in writing code using Python or C++ applied to areas such as Computer Vision, Machine Learning, Motion Planning, Motion Control and Virtual Reality.

  • Electronics – Ability to prototype electronics systems that interface with sensors, motors, microcontrollers (e.g., Arduino, Teensy, ESP32) and embedded computers (e.g., Raspberry Pi).

  • Mechatronics - Experience designing building and/or programming robots / mechatronic systems to solve an interesting problem.

  • Data Analysis - Ability to analyse and visualise data using tools such as Excel, Matlab, SPSS, or Pandas

While not essential, any of the following skills are highly desirable:

  • Animation experience (Blender, Unity).

  • Prior experience working with robotic systems

  • Experience using heavy machining equipment (e.g., Mill and/or Lathe).

  • Experience programming robotics using the ROS/ROS2 framework.

  • Experience with developing solutions for deployment on real hardware robotic platforms.

  • Prior experience with the Siemens NX CAD software.

  • Great sketching skills are always welcome.
