Catalent Biologics Emeryville, CA site, formerly the startup company Redwood Bioscience, has developed a proprietary approach for site-specific bioconjugation to produce next-generation antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs). This technology, termed SMARTag®, is based on use of the aldehyde-tag site-specific protein modification technology and Catalent's novel conjugation chemistry and proprietary, stable linkers. SMARTag is a clinical-stage technology that was named Runner Up for Best Platform at the 2022 World ADC Awards in San Diego, CA. The Catalent Biologics Emeryville site comprises a close-knit team of scientists working cross-functionally with each other to nimbly achieve our goals and milestones. We are a research site, working to develop therapeutic ADC drug candidates for clinical testing. We also continuously strive to improve and expand our technology platform. The team has a focus on publishing papers and filing intellectual property to contribute to the exciting and dynamic field of bioconjugation and drug conjugates.
This position is based in Emeryville, CA, 94608 in the EmeryStation West campus, at 5959 Horton St., easily accessible by BART / EmeryGoRound, AMTRAK, or car (with private, secured, on-site parking provided).

The Role:
- Oversee antibody-drug conjugation, purification, and analysis to support partner and internal programs.
- Coordinate production timelines by working closely with upstream (Protein Science and Chemistry) and downstream (Biocharacterization) teams to ensure on-time delivery of requested materials.
- Ensure expected product quality, including meeting target DAR, monomeric purity, and endotoxin levels.
- Mentor direct reports, ensure that they learn, grow, and are engaged in the site's work.
- Represent the site in customer-facing meetings, and interface with the broader scientific community through publications and presentations at scientific conventions.
- Set a culture of achievement that is execution and results oriented.
- Identifying and enabling novel therapeutic applications for aldehyde tag technology.
- Interfacing with internal and external stakeholders as a leader representing our site and SMARTag business. This includes presenting data both at professional conferences and in private meeting settings.
- All other duties as assigned.
The Candidate:
- Requires a Bachelors of Science in Biology, Chemistry, or a related discipline with 12+ years of industry experience; OR a Masters Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or a related discipline with 8+ years of industry experience; OR a PhD in Biology, Chemistry, or a related discipline with 5+ years of industry experience.
- Must have significant experience with antibody-drug conjugation, ADC purification and analysis.
- Experience with bioconjugation of high potency bioactive molecules is required.
- Demonstrated expertise in the optimization of ADC bioconjugation, bioconjugate purification, and concentration. Formulation experience a plus.
- Chromatography expertise (FPLC and HPLC) required.
- Ability to perform HIC and SEC analyses and interpret results required.
- Diafiltration (TFF) expertise required.
- Strong organizational skills, with demonstrated experience in project goal/milestone setting, timeline tracking, and coordinating on-time deliverables is needed. Experience working across broad functional teams a plus.
- Track record of success as an individual contributor in a biopharmaceutical company. Evidence of leadership skills (as shown through people or project management or other site responsibilities) is required.
- 5+ years of experience managing projects strongly desired, but must be able to manage project performed at CROs.
- Physical requirements: must be able to sit/stand/walk regularly with use of computers/phones on a daily basis. Must be able to lift up to 15lbs.
Pay:
- The anticipated salary range for this role in Emeryville, CA is $148,000 to $170,000 annually. The final salary offered to a successful candidate may vary, and will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to: the type and length of experience within the job, type and length of experience within the industry, skillset, education, business needs, etc. Catalent is a multi-state employer and this salary range may not reflect positions that work in other states.
