Job Description

The Head Carpenter shall be employed in all shows and events that require the use of the Stage Department at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle. Events include Broadway shows, corporate events, dance, comedy, and musical acts among others. The responsibilities include working with the Technical Director to ensure a safe running and supervising local crews, assigning crews, working with other stage departments to complete the needs of the show, Production Advance, Day-of-Show Load In & Load Out, Run-of-Show. Must be able and willing to work with all departments in the theater. This position earns $46 per hour and receives benefits according to STG's contract with IATSE local 15. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned • Manage & assist with all aspects of Stage Operations on Night-of-Show, from Load In through Load Out. • Assist with the offloading of all stage equipment from a Semi or other transport consisting of trusses, lights, road boxes, video panels, cable boxes, chain motors, set pieces, rolling carts and all other audio and visual equipment required for the specifics of that show. Most equipment comes in boxes with rolling wheels some will need to be carried and passed off. the Head Carpenter shall be required to push/pull/Carry such boxes and items up to 200ft from the truck to the stage or staging area. Every effort is taken roll equipment when possible. • May be required to run cues in a multitude of situations including working in low light, strobe, fog, and other limited visibility situations. They may be required to lift, carry, push, pull heavy equipment. They may be required to twist, turn, squat, climb, bend. They may be required to work in a loud and disorienting environment. • Reads stage layout specifications and blueprints and confers with Road Crew to determine type and location of sets, props, scenery, lighting, and sound equipment required for specific event. • Will be the primary contact with clients on and backstage to assess the day of needs of the show. And be the direct contact with Tour’s Production and/or Tour Manager via cell phone, email and in-person communication on Day-of-Show along with FOH of the Theater. • Will oversee all Departments on stage and assign positions based on skill and seniority. • Ensures adherence to day schedule, breaks, manages crew and safe work environment. • Maintains the stage area to provide a safe and clean work environment. • Watches and manages during show operations to ensure safe and smooth operation. • Distribute and explain DOS production needs to all Production Staff. • Assist with planning and execution of Venue Policies & Procedures • Assist with New Hire paperwork and New Hire orientation. • Will work with the Technical Director on advancing of shows, site surveys, suppling estimates, payroll, Maintenance schedule and other duties. QUALIFICATIONS • Must have working knowledge of Traditional stage equipment and departments • Demonstrated attention to detail. • Ability to work with a team in all aspects of interaction (House Crew, IATSE Crews, Road Crew, and Clients) • Knowledge and ability to run a Broadway show and cues. • Ability to work with the Technical Director with work duties and priorities. • Ability to lead a crew of varying sizes. • Ability to adapt to changing priorities of a show and fluctuating schedule in a positive manner. • Ability to Lift 50lbs unassisted • Ability to work in a safe and predictable manner under stressful conditions and long hours. • Ability to be proactive in work assignments and work independently. • Ability to speak other languages such as Spanish or ASL is a plus. Physical Requirements: • This is an on-call as needed job function so there is never a set schedule or set number of hours worked per week, it varies depending on how busy the company is. The position is physical in nature and requires physical mobility including: balancing, bending, carrying, climbing, crawling, reaching, squatting, twisting, lifting up to 50 pounds alone, pushing/pulling up to 100 pounds alone. Standing is mostly dynamic and intermittent with walking. (Surface: varies – finished/unfinished concrete, gravel, earth, uneven terrain, linoleum, hardwood, plywood, carpet). • Sitting -> 40% of the time-While Performing Essential duties: Advancing shows, paperwork, show prep, scheduling crews.
