Job Description
Job Overview
NYSBC is seeking a qualified and experienced HVAC Technician to join our facilities team. This hands-on role is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and repair of critical building systems that support advanced structural biology research, including sensitive instrumentation requiring precise environmental control. The ideal candidate will have a strong HVAC background, excellent troubleshooting skills, and the ability to work independently and collaboratively in a scientific environment.
Duties
• Operate, maintain, and repair air conditioning, heating, and ventilation systems, including: air handling units, VAVs, boilers, chillers, VFDs, pumps, water heaters, dampers, actuators.
• Monitor and adjust Building Management System (BMS).
• Perform basic plumbing tasks related to sinks, toilets, and pressure tanks.
• Maintain and follow water treatment procedures for closed/open-loop HVAC and domestic water systems.
• Respond to work orders in a timely manner; organize, prioritize, and document maintenance activities.
• Perform regular inspections of mechanical rooms and critical systems to ensure reliability.
• Communicate clearly with management and team members regarding system status and outstanding issues.
Requirements
• High school diploma or GED required; technical training or HVAC certification preferred.
• CFC Universal Certification required.
• Minimum 3–5 years of experience in commercial or institutional HVAC plant operations.
• Strong knowledge of plumbing systems, BMS interfaces, and standard mechanical equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and equipment manuals.
• Proficient in Microsoft Outlook and BMS platforms.
• Must be able to work flexible hours, including overnight shifts and weekends, as assigned.
Preferred Qualifications and Experience
• Other relevant FDNY COFs.
• Prior experience in facilities supporting laboratories or research institutions.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $70,000.00 - $85,000.00 per year
