If you are selected, you may be required to complete a one-year probationary period.

This position is designated as Moderate Risk and requires a background investigation. Unless an appropriate background investigation is already on record with the Office of Personnel Management, you must undergo a background investigation. All conditions of the pre-employment security process must be met before an official letter of employment can be issued with a report for duty date.

You will be required to meet ongoing specialized safety training requirements in order to meet field safety standards.

Qualifications

NOTE:  You must meet qualification requirements, including any requirements described in the Education section, by the closing date of this announcement.

In addition to the basic entry education requirements, you must have specialized experience and/or directly related education as described below:

To qualify for the GS-12 level, you must have 1 year of full-time* specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level defined as conducting occupational health inspections of complex work sites and field locations; uses the latest control techniques and/or the impacts of potential hazardous materials to train participants who respond to hazardous incidents; partners with internal stakeholders to develop solutions to complex health and safety problems.

Your answers to the online assessment will be used to evaluate your competencies in the following areas:

  • Skill in applying, a wide range of concepts, principles, and methodologies of the industrial hygiene or the consumer safety fields.
  • Ability to provide technical information to non-technical audiences and provide solutions in an easy to understand format.
  • Knowledge of industrial processes, materials and methods; and the physiological action of toxic materials, biological entities, and physical stresses encountered in the field and during
    emergency responses.
  • Skill in researching reactions of various chemicals or physical stressors and determining the reactions on the physical or mental status of a human.
  • Skill in using quantitative measurement techniques, for evaluating the magnitude of environmental stresses and their effects on health, wellbeing and efficiency of staff.
  • Ability to develop, implement and document a comprehensive health and safety program.
  • Skill in maintaining and updating records in accordance with record schedules.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

You must have a bachelor's or higher degree from an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related sciences; or a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH).  NOTE:  Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
