Build a brilliant future with Hiscox

About us:

HISCOX is an international insurer specialized in the market of luxury goods & property, and high end professional insurance. As experts in risk we give people and businesses the confidence to realise their ambitions. With offices in 9 European countries we have a very international staff and encourage a culture that fosters inclusion and collaboration, offering exciting opportunities for personal and professional growth.

In our Lisbon office we have the privilege of employing approximately 500 exceptional professionals representing 29 diverse nationalities. Despite our central location within the city, we recognize the importance of maintaining a healthy work-life balance. As part of our commitment to our employees’ well-being, we provide a 35-hour workweek along with the option for a hybrid working schedule.

The Role:

Hiscox are embarking on a multi-year, multi-€10m pan-European business and technology transformation programme. The programme targets a number of key strategic outcomes: operational efficiency and scalability, connectivity, quality and speed of change, and analytics. With such scale and complexity, although the programme design will be pan-European, and the programme ethos adopt-not-adapt, the roadmap structure will focus on a lead country, Germany, with other business units following suit.

We are now fully underway with this programme, involving multiple software vendor partners as well as our internal business, change and IT teams.

Central to the applicational scope of this programme is the delivery of a new and industry-leading Insurance Core system platform, encompassing Insurance

Policy Administration, Claims Management and Billing capabilities.

Key Responsibilities:

You will be part of the IT team tasked with implementing and providing maintenance to our new Insurance Core system on this programme. Achieving this goal is a collaborative effort between Hiscox and the external provider of this technology platform, who is coaching our internal teams on the different competencies needed to design, implement, configure, and test their proprietary software.

Your daily tasks will include multiple activities, some of which are described below.

System configuration

As an IT Application Specialist, the focal point of your activities will be the implementation of documented Business requirements into changes on Hiscox’s new Core system by way of low/no-code mechanisms.

You will get to learn and apply the low/no-code system configuration tools that the platform offers, such as:

  • Visual and intuitive interfaces for setting up insurance product components

  • Using logical blocks for implementing if-then-else business rule conditions

  • Back-office screens to configure workflow triggers and resulting actions

  • Maintenance of reference data and system parameters via web interfaces

  • A simple text-based syntax for traversing the application’s data model

  • Elementary SQL usage for light database-level tasks

  • All changes implemented without resorting to code customisation

As this is an IT system geared towards the insurance sector, you will be tasked with configuring Business aspects such as:

  • The Insurance Product catalogue and structure (coverages, limits, clauses)

  • Insurance business processes and flows

  • Underwriting and Claims management business rules

  • Core business reference data

  • Workflow and tasks assignment rules

  • User security roles and privileges

Requirement Interpretation

In order to understand what is expected from your changes, you will be reading and interpreting the functional design documentation produced by our Analysts, which depict the requirements they capture from the different Business areas. You will be interacting frequently with the Business Analysis team in order to seek clarification and ensure close alignment between the implemented solution and the intended Business needs.

Collaboration Work

As part of a geographically distributed team comprised by members of both Hiscox IT and our external partner working under the Agile principles, you will be expected to participate in the traditional ceremonies such as sprint planning meetings, knowledge sharing sessions, daily scrums and sprint retrospectives. In addition, you will be asked to provide effort estimates and report progress on your activities to your team leaders. You will also be expected to remain available to provide adhoc clarification and support to other colleagues in need.

Testing and Bug Fixing

The Testing team will assess whether the system behavior matches the functional documentation and, in cases of misalignment, register system defects accordingly. You will be expected to provide corrective fixes for defects logged against functionalities implemented by either yourself or those of your co-workers. You may also be occasionally requested to assist the Testing team in performing system testing activities for components developed by other individuals.
