Job Title:Junior Computational Designer

Overview:
The Virtual Construction Lab of Schüco (VCL) is seeking an Junior* Computational Designer to join our office in New York City. Schüco is a German-based international leader in the aluminum facade industry, developing high-performance door, window, and curtainwall systems for landmark projects around the globe. VCL is a diverse team within Schüco that functions as an innovation lab for the company at large. The Junior Computational Designer would join an office of around 20 people that have backgrounds in design, engineering, programming, and visualization. The team collaborates across specialties to research and develop new products, software, and visualization tools for Schüco. The tasks of a VCL designer span between architecture, industrial design, programming, and construction. The ideal candidate will bring a skillset that fits this intersection and an enthusiastic drive to learn and innovate. Work will vary from project to project, including but not limited to:
• Design, develop, and implement software applications using object-oriented programming (OOP) technologies
• The ideal candidate will bring a designer perspective to developer problems, crafting unique solutions.
• Candidate will join ongoing projects, with on-the-job training in developing plugins for Rhino and Rhino Compute.
• Research and development
• Ideation and pursuit of new solutions for industry pain points.
• Use and maintenance of an FDM 3D printer.
• Requires the interest and flexibility to gain new skills and knowledge as needed.
• Modeling and asset creation
• Creation of 2d and 3d drawings, digital models, and renders for VCL projects, utilizing design skills to produce assets quickly and accurately.
• Graphic design of printed marketing materials.
• Preliminary simulations of product thermal performance.
• Technical Support
• On-the-job training in Schüco and its extensive product library will enable the ideal candidate to act as a technical expert for other members of the VCL team, supporting them as a valued resource.
• Troubleshoot and repair issues and bugs
• The ideal candidate will be responsible for identification, troubleshooting, and providing solutions for business-critical bugs and issues found in VCL’s software development projects.
*Depending on experience, we may also consider mid-level candidates for this role.
The position is based in NYC but often collaborates with Schüco’s main offices in Bielefeld, Germany, with occasional travel for training or meetings.
Requirements:
-B.Arch. from an accredited university
-Aptitude with Rhino, Grasshopper, AutoCAD, Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator
-Aptitude with programming languages such as C# or Python
-Exceptional communication skills between teammates and clients
-Strong writing and public speaking skills
-Experience using/maintaining 3D printers
-Relevant design experience, especially within the facade industry
-English fluency is required, German proficiency is a plus
-Legal authorization to work in the United States
