Company Overview
Kairos Power is a new nuclear energy technology and engineering company whose mission is to enable the world’s transition to clean energy, with the ultimate goal to dramatically improve people’s quality of life while protecting the environment. This goal will be accomplished through the commercialization of the fluoride-salt-cooled, high-temperature reactor (FHR) that can be deployed with robust safety, affordable costs, and flexible operation to accommodate the expansion of variable renewables.
Job Summary
As a KP-SAM Code Development Intern, you will collaborate in the development of KP-SAM, an advanced reactor systems analysis computer code. This code will be used by Kairos Power safety analysts to perform all safety related transient analyses related to the Kairos Power Fluoride-cooled High-temperature Reactor (KP-FHR). Your contributions will include the development of new reduced order models and methods, verification and validation, and documentation. KP-SAM is based on the MOOSE multi-physics environment, which allows for the code to be coupled with structural materials, porous media, and resolved computation fluid dynamics.
Responsibilities
- Develop advanced reduced order multi-dimensional models such as 3-D bypass flow and reflector model or 2-D downcomer model for KP-SAM
- Verify and validate the developed model, and demonstrating its use in relevant transient scenarios
- Document the newly developed models in theory manual, assessment report, and user manual
- Assist other KP-SAM development work
Qualifications
- Current student pursuing Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or similar discipline
- Knowledgeable about nuclear reactor system analysis
- Strong analysis skills
- Experiences in CFD simulations and reduced order multi-dimensional models
- Experience with system analysis codes development or application, such as SAM, RELAP, TRACE, SASYYS a plus
- Experience with MOOSE framework, libmesh, PETSC
- Programming experiences in C++, python, FORTRAN, LaTeX
- Familiar with scientific computational environments and tools, such as linux/unix/Mac OX, version control tools Git, shell scripts, paraview
- An excellent technical communicator: Actively listen for and identify the team’s needs, anticipate priorities and keep the team apprised of relevant information
- Ability to work with highly collaborative team and proven team player working with various teams
- Ability to solve problems quickly and efficiently
- Prioritizes and ensures safety of one self and others
- Ability to proactively collect, manage and transfer knowledge
- Ability to seek different and novel ways to create efficiencies when working on problems, challenges and issues

Travel
- Some travel may be required, i.e. 10%
The hourly range for this position is $28-$32 for employees working onsite at our Alameda, CA headquarters or $25-$29 for remote employees working in California. The range provided in this job posting represents the typical range or starting rate of candidates hired in California. Factors that may be used to determine your actual salary may include your education, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, the market data for your work location, and a comparison to other employees already in the role.
