Job Description
Database Administrator (DBA) with Performance Tuning experience within a complex environment on AWS
We are looking for an experienced Database Administrator (DBA) with proven skills in performance tuning beyond basic index optimization and query tuning in high-concurrency environments on AWS (RDS & Aurora). This role is ideal for someone who thrives in complex, multidatabase setups, understands performance trade-offs, and has experience optimizing databases in high-transaction multi tenanted DB instance scenarios.
Job responsibilities
- Optimize, and scale multiple database instances on AWS RDS and Aurora, focusing on MySQL.
- Analyze high-concurrency workloads, tune databases for performance, and resolve issues related to query & resource contention at both the DB and server level.
- Collaborate with client personnel to run EXPLAIN plans, analyze slow logs, and optimize both index patterns and wait contention issues.
- Utilize tools like AWS Performance Insights to diagnose and address database performance issues across multiple DB instances.
- Implement and manage database schema migrations, ensuring minimal downtime and understanding trade-offs in rollback and breaking changes.
- Develop strategies for managing application performance across large-scale database environments (tens or hundreds of instances) and solving complex challenges involving multi tenancy.
- Collaborate with development teams to ensure database queries and structures tested and profiled within the SDLC.
Job qualifications
- Proven experience with MySQL in AWS RDS/Aurora environments, preferably in high-scale, multi-tenant setups.
- Strong understanding of performance tuning, including index optimization, query optimization, and EXPLAIN plans.
- Experience working in high-concurrency environments with large transaction volumes and resolving contention issues.
- Deep knowledge of database schema migrations, including how to manage trade-offs and rollbacks in complex environments.
- Solid experience with AWS tools (Performance Insights, CloudWatch) and handling disk I/O and other wait event problems.
- Ability to communicate complex technical details clearly and effectively.
Professional Skills
- Prior exposure to multi-database environments with many tenants or instances.
- Familiarity with the PHP Yii Framework or other ORMs.
This role is designed for someone who can hit the ground running in a complex, multi-database setup on AWS, balancing immediate performance fixes with long-term optimization strategies.
