Job Description SummaryThe Lead Engineer, Usability works in close collaboration with a cross-functional team of UX Designers, UX Researchers, Engineers, clinical applications, customers and users, product management, marketing, and field teams to optimize user and system interaction and help define and develop new product technologies to meet user needs. This usability engineer position has a focus on human factors engineering to drive significant design improvements in product architecture and will be responsible for human factors-based research, analysis, and testing.

Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities

Responsible for understanding the interactions between humans and other elements of a system. Applies theory, principles, data, and methods within the engineering design process to assure proper interaction between products, systems, and processes and the people who use them. Human Factors Engineering is also concerned with the "fit" between the user, equipment, and their environments; taking into account the user's capabilities and limitations, seeking to ensure that tasks, functions, information and the environment suit each user.

Define âdesign for usabilityâ acceptance criteria that will meet customer expectations. Drive usability evaluation of new features.Â

Work closely with customers, marketing, clinical applications and field personnel to understand key usability needs and develop metrics to quantify usability design.Â

Provide domain expertise to participate in technical design reviews, technical discussions, and risk mitigations with focus on evaluation of design of user workflows, interactions, and experiences based on user-centered design principles and customer needs.Â

Work with design teams to lead formative usability studies including developing study plans, scripts and reports during new product development.

Ensure product safety and quality by conducting summative usability studies.Â

Work with new product development core teams to lead usability design and own usability-related program deliverables (Use Analysis Report, Use FMEA, Known Use Problems analysis, etc).Â

Engage with internal and external usability experts & capture cross-industry best practices.
Required Qualifications
-
Bachelor's Degree in Human Factors Engineering, Ergonomics, Cognitive or Experimental Psychology, or Industrial Engineering with a minimum of 5+ years of experience OR Masterâs Degree in Human Factors Engineering, Ergonomics, Cognitive or Experimental Psychology, or Industrial Engineering with a minimum of 3+ years of experience OR Ph.D. in Human Factors Engineering with a minimum of 1 year of experience

Demonstrated experience in Human Factors Engineering and its role in the broader human centered design process

Proven ability to develop timely and effective solutions for challenging design problemsÂ

Effective communication skills - ability to present ideas clearly and concisely

Demonstrated ability to pursue tasks to completionÂ
Desired Characteristics

Experience applying Human Factors Engineering in medical device product development, Healthcare, and/or other similar regulated industry

Familiarity with applying medical device standards such as IEC 62366-1 and ISO 14971

Excellent oral and written communication skills

Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve problems
