Job Title: Legal Copy Editor (hybrid)

Location: US-GA-Atlanta (Sandy Springs)

FLSA: Exempt

Job Overview:

As a member of the Legal department, this newly formed role of Legal Copyeditor/Proofreader will review and edit all legal contracts, forms, and other related documents while reporting to a corporate attorney. This includes meticulously checking text for errors and ensuring that all content adheres to corporate guidelines and is compliant with government regulations. Editing will also include utilizing stylesheets and modifying tables as well as making changes to improve the legibility and general quality of documents. The position will be under the immediate guidance of a lawyer.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Proofread legal documents to ensure content quality related to consistency, spelling, dictation, syntax, punctuation, and grammar
  • Compare documents word for word against originals to ensure accurate conversion
  • Check handwritten revisions and/or electronic red lines against working draft to ensure all corrections are made accurately
  • Ensure the content of forms, contracts, and all other legal documents are accurate, clear, and complete, and that the material is organized logically
  • Create, modify and fill tables within Word documents to display all required form and contract information orderly
  • Utilize stylesheets to format paragraphs and characters instantly and consistently
  • Create templates in Word in order to predefine page layout, fonts, margins and styles for frequently edited documents
  • Use established proofreading marks to note corrections
  • Work closely with members of the legal, account management, and marketing teams to ensure the accuracy of all information
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Job Requirements:

  • Expert-level knowledge of the English language, grammar, spelling, and punctuation
  • Experience as a legal or technical writer/editor is a plus
  • Experience as a paralegal is a plus
  • Advanced level experience working with Microsoft Word
  • Knowledge of various style guides is preferred (The Chicago Manual of Style, Associated Press Stylebook)
  • Training or experience in copy editing is required
  • Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Legal Studies, or Journalism are preferred
  • Must be authorized to work in the U.S
  • Must be able to successfully pass a background check
