Job Description

In Applied Material's Office of the CTO, we are building a unique Engineered Optics R&D team to pioneer the manufacturing and commercialization of integrated nano-photonic devices for applications in imaging, sensing and displays. We are harnessing the power of Applied Material's world-leading material science and nano-fabrication capabilities to enable the next generation of photonic devices.

We are seeking a full-time Lens Designer with 3 - 7 years of experience in designing, prototyping, and debugging imaging and projection optics. The position requires a MS or PhD in optical engineering, optical sciences or physics with modeling, design, and hands-on prototyping experience with optical systems. Candidates must be proficient in theory and practice of imaging systems, cameras, and projectors. Candidates must have experience defining optical and image quality specifications. Candidates must enjoy exploring and building new architectures for imaging, sensing and display systems. Candidates must be passionate about invention, novel solutions to real-world problems, and robust engineering to take research to product development. Successful candidates must thrive at both independent exploration and collaborative execution in a cross-functional team.

Key Qualifications

  • MS or PhD equivalent in optical engineering, optical sciences, or physics
  • 3 - 7 years of experience modeling, designing, prototyping, and debugging imaging optical systems
  • Proficient in high-performance lens design, tolerance analysis, de-sensitization, and as-built high-yield optimization
  • Proficient building both benchtop proof-of-concepts as well as refined module-level prototypes
  • Proficient defining, analyzing, and measuring image quality metrics
  • Experience integrating micro-displays, spatial light modulators, image sensors and photodiodes
  • Experience collaborating with suppliers and partners for module design, assembly, and evaluation
  • Proficient in optical simulation tools such as ZEMAX, FRED, CODE V or LightTools
  • Effective in communication of advantages, disadvantages and risks of technical designs and decisions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Familiarity with diffractive optics, polarization optics, and novel optical materials
  • Experience with design for manufacturing, tolerance analysis, and statistical performance analysis
  • Experience collaborating with optomechanical and mechanical design teams

U.S. Salary Range:

$164,000.00 - $225,500.00

The salary offered to a selected candidate will be based on a number of factors including location and level and will vary depending on confirmed job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. In addition to a comprehensive benefits package, candidates may be eligible for other forms of compensation such as participation in a bonus and a stock award program, as applicable.
