What You Will Contribute to Altos

In this role, you will be responsible for the development of histology capabilities and infrastructure at our Bay Area Institute of Science. This is a hands-on role that will provide technical support for several projects undertaken by multidisciplinary teams at Altos Labs. The successful candidate will report directly to the Senior Director of Scientific Operations. This is a full-time position with opportunities for further training and professional development.

  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the histology laboratory, including maintenance of equipment and ordering of consumables.
  • Perform administrative duties such as maintaining service contracts and reviewing budgets related to the histology hub.
  • Provide training and support to process fresh, fixed and frozen tissues for high-quality histology staining using routine and specialized stains.
  • Develop standard operating procedures for histology and provide risk assessment of lab infrastructure.
  • Serve as point person and schedule coordinator for highly specialized scientific instruments.
  • Lead efforts to implement and maintain LIMS software for sample, inventory, and workflow tracking.
  • Support research activities of investigator labs in collaboration with scientists.
  • Provide input for developing project-specific experimental strategies, techniques, and procedures to meet research goals.
  • Apply professional judgment in the interpretation of experimental results and innovate new approaches related to histology.
  • Contribute to writing and dissemination of research results as necessary.
  • Review research activities to determine where new information, methods, or collaborations could positively impact projects and improve efficiency of processes.
  • Lead efforts to coordinate outsourced histology services provided by contract research organizations and other external partners.
Who You Are

The right candidate will possess the following experience and abilities.

  • Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Science or related discipline, or equivalent combination of relevant education and work experience.
  • At least 5 years practical experience in a biological, academic, medical, or pharmaceutical research environment.
  • Deep expertise in histological preparations of human and laboratory animal tissues, with essential skills in paraffin embedding, microtome sectioning, cryo-embedding, cryo-sectioning, histochemistry, immunostaining and RNAscope.
  • Experience with a wide range of immunohistochemistry techniques for brightfield and fluorescence imaging.
  • Experience with other tissue-based methods for expression analysis.
  • Experience with automated slide staining and scanning.
  • Experience with advising on, planning, and implementing histological experiments.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with researchers.
  • Highly organized and self-motivated.
  • Meticulous attention to detail with a solution-driven mindset.
  • Strong communication skills, with proven ability to work with diverse and cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to multitask and work across multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Flexible with the ability to react positively to changing priorities.
  • High level of computer literacy to maintain electronic records.

Salary range: 158,950 - 215,050
