Currently, we are in the beginning of a worldwide energy transformation of the power grid. Conventional power sources such as coal or nuclear are replaced by renewable, intermediate, energy sources such as wind and solar power. The transition is not only heavily reducing the total amount of inertia in the power grid, but also increases the need for services such as power factor control and voltage regulation. Hitachi Energy's STATCOM, the SVC Light®, is a high voltage application that can support the power grid with steady state and dynamic reactive power compensation for several purposes. Three different master thesis topics related to SVC Light design are proposed below. The candidate will be matched with the topic that best suits his/her background and interests.

Study of high frequency harmonic filters - design and performance
This study aims to investigate the conducted and radiated emissions of high frequency voltage harmonics from large scale STATCOM applications. Understanding the origin of the emissions and how they propagate through the system will be utilized when looking into different kinds of damped filters. The performance of the different filters shall also be reviewed. The study aims to provide suggestions on filter designs to meet emission limits set out by industry standards.

Study of ferro-resonance phenomena in high-impedance grounded substations
The purpose of this study is to investigate the phenomena of ferro-resonance in high-impedance grounded substations. The ferro resonance may contribute to the saturation of phase to ground connected voltage transformers. This risk is commonly mitigated by implementing a third winding, loaded with a resistive load, to provide damping features to the circuit. The study aims to propose a methodology on how to derive an appropriate size of this resistive load for such system given different system configurations and high voltage equipment. Other mitigation measures such as different other means of high impedance ground connections may also be investigated.

Sensitivity study of STATCOM harmonic stability with respect to main circuit parameters and control tuning
The purpose of this study is to perform a sensitivity analysis of the impact of a number of design choices, operating scenarios and control tuning on STATCOM harmonic stability. By performing a passivity-based analysis, based on PSCAD simulation results, the STATCOM harmonic stability can be assessed. The aim of the study is to evaluate to what extent the STATCOM passivity is affected by e.g. main circuit inductance, use of filters, STATCOM control mode and operating point.

Your responsibilities

  • Deep dive into the SVC Light STATCOM system and relevant constituent parts.
  • Perform simulations and calculations in MATLAB and PSCAD.
  • Present results during the thesis.
  • You will work in close collaboration with Hitachi Energy engineers.

Your background

  • Master of science degree student in engineering physics, electrical engineering, or energy systems engineering.
  • Solution-oriented with new ideas.
  • Knowledge in modelling and simulation in MATLAB, PSCAD or similar is an advantage.
  • Fluency in English in reading and writing.
