Role Mission: As a key member of our Platform Team, the Senior Database Engineer (Google Cloud/MySQL) will be responsible for the data focused elements of our application stack. You will be participating in architecture sessions and strategizing around the future of the data components of our stack and working to design, build, and maintain these elements. LeagueApps is on a journey to modernize our tech stack, and as such this role will be vital to the success of our future endeavors.

What You’ll Do:

• Design, build and operate the underlying data components of our technology stack
• Manage and maintain our existing databases (MySQL), and migrate them to Cloud Native Technologies (Google Cloud SQL and its associated technologies)
• Collaborate with product management, product engineering, the rest of the platform team and also our data team (responsible for data warehousing and analytics). Help these teams think through and appropriately use database/data technologies, especially in the design stage of new products
• Participate in design efforts around our modernization strategy (in-process) - a move from a java monolith to a microservices based, agile infrastructure and processes
• Help teams think through the use of other data related technologies for our stack (e.g. NoSQL, Graph, and Geospatial database)
• Use SRE principles and DevOps philosophies to help us automate and scale our data infrastructure using technologies like IaC (Terraform) and observability tooling (Datadog)
• Troubleshoot incidents and issues related to the data infrastructure
• Participate in Tier 3 on-call rotations to act as a high level escalation point resource to respond to incidents. Note: Our Customer Support team triages incidents, and our product engineering team is responsible for supporting the products they author, and as such this role is only in an on-call rotation for significant escalations
• Implementing solutions that improve database performance and efficiency
• Take point on developing new database designs or modifying existing designs to meet needs
• Planning for BD capacity needs
• Designing databases that can scale up
• Documenting the database design in detail, including structure, security settings, backup plans, etc.
• Troubleshooting problems with existing databases

Note: You will not be working alone on these endeavors, but will be part of a team, a significant percentage of whom already understand and have been building out these technologies. As we grow, we’ve identified a need for someone to own these endeavors, and hence this role.

Who You Are:

• 4-5+ years of experience designing and building highly reliable and scalable cloud based database architectures, with a focus on MySQL, Postgres, and generally the Google suite of data technologies
• You know how to code (bash/python count), but are not necessarily a developer, understand SRE principles, and seek to automate your work wherever possible
• You have experiences in varied data technologies, including: relational, NoSQL, Graph, and Geospatial database technologies; data warehouses/Lake Houses/Delta Lake/Snowflake; and varied tools and technologies at the ELT/ETL and Analytics layers
• Data Science experience is a plus, but not required
• You are by nature a collaborative individual who is happy to be an enabler of other teams, and is willing to research and advocate for better ways to do things
• Having an interest in sports is a plus, especially in bettering society through sports, as this is a core part of our culture

Our salary ranges are based on paying competitively for our size and industry, and are one part of the total compensation package that also includes benefits, and other opportunities at LeagueApps. Individual pay decisions are based on a number of factors, including qualifications for the role, experience level, skillset, and balancing internal pay parity relative to other LeagueApps employees. We expect the majority of the candidates who are offered roles at LeagueApps to fall healthily throughout the range based on these factors.
