An Operations Manager's purpose is to provide leadership and direction to department supervisors placing specific emphasis in the continuous efforts to improve all aspects of operations and production functions. They manage and direct the activities of a designated manufacturing area, ensure that the overall business objectives are met, continuously improve efficiency and achieve cost reduction goals. They work closely with the plant management team to determine long term strategic plans.

Job purpose

An Operations Manager's purpose is to provide leadership and direction to department supervisors placing specific emphasis in the continuous efforts to improve all aspects of operations and production functions. They manage and direct the activities of a designated manufacturing area, ensure that the overall business objectives are met, continuously improve efficiency and achieve cost reduction goals. They work closely with the plant management team to determine long term strategic plans.

Key responsibilities

  • Establishes and is held accountable for achieving Environment, Health, and Safety goals for the facility. Promotes a positive team environment focused on continuously improving the EHS program
  • Provides the leadership required to develop and maintain consistent conformance to operating, quality, safety, security, and housekeeping procedures for a 3/4-shift operation.
  • Proactively addresses operational issues in the areas of responsibility
  • Works with plant Leadership team to identify and drive operational improvements, cost reduction initiatives, process flow, inventory reduction, etc.
  • Manages and drives production and coordinates department activities with other managers and support functions
  • Meets all operational and financial objectives as detailed in the Business Plan
  • Drives department performance measures such as labor cost, material accuracy, controllables (MRO,Scrap), plant metrics, safety and local cost centers
  • Ensures positive employee relations, providing coaching and direction to direct reports and department employees
  • Works with the department supervisor(s) to identify and develop training programs to meet specific needs and to support the company's continuous quality improvement goals
  • Works closely with employees to resolve issues in a fair and consistent manner, adhering to all company policies and procedures as well as legal regulations
  • Ensures systems and processes are in place to properly instruct employees in plant safety and the safe operations of department equipment
  • Manages production and coordinates with and supports other areas as needed
  • Provides direct management of department supervisors and ensures effective supervision of hourly workers
  • Supports broader business needs such as operation reviews, customer visits, presentations, etc
  • Oversees all production planning/scheduling activities within area
  • Adheres to, enforces, and promotes all facility policies, procedures and standards, including safety, quality, and operations
  • Identifies, facilitates and organizes training for employees as required or needed
  • Coordinates production planning and scheduling activities with materials group
  • Ensures uptime, machine condition, and capability of machine equipment in department or area
  • Ensures good communication processes are in place to assure positive employee and management relations including communication across shifts and department
  • Reviews production procedures and methods and provide recommendations, plans, and implementation of projects/tasks for reducing costs and/or improving quality
  • Participates in the review of business proposals, cost estimates, and new product design to maximize the profitability of new products and minimize time required to design and start production
  • Ensures highest level of confidentiality is maintained
  • Understands and adheres to current quality and control policies. In addition, ensure the hourly workforce follows the required checks per the Control Plan
  • Performs other duties as requested, directed or assigned

What we're looking for

  • Minimum of a bachelor's degree in a manufacturing related field. Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience supervising employees in a manufacturing environment
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and strong interpersonal skills are required
  • Must be able to think strategically
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills are required
  • Business knowledge, excellent problem-solving skills and good project management capability required
  • Proficient with Microsoft office products - Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint is required
  • At least 3 years of Lean Manufacturing experience required
  • Self-directed/self-motivated
  • Excellent drive for results with the ability to coordinate projects from start to completion
