Optical Engineer

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Optical Engineer to join our Optics team. You will be responsible for designing, prototyping, and testing optical and optomechanical systems and components for our innovative medical devices. You will work alongside an awesome team of EE, ME, Microfabrication, Software Engineers, Neuroscientists, and Clinicians dedicated to using cutting-edge technologies to make a meaningful impact on the lives of patients worldwide.  The ideal person for this job has exceptional building skills and is eager to grow by diving head first into difficult projects.

Role responsibilities:

• Design and develop free-space optical systems and integrated optical components for ophthalmic devices
• Design and prototype optomechanical subsystems
• Rapid prototyping, testing and analysis of new systems and ideas for feasibility

Key qualifications:

• 2+ years designing and testing custom optical systems
• Bachelor's degree in Optical Engineering or a related field. Master's degree is a plus.
• Solid understanding of geometrical optics and imaging systems
• Proficiency with CAD and rapid prototyping
• Proficiency calibrating and characterizing optical systems 
• Experience with display technologies and spatial light modulators
• Experience with Python 

Preferred qualifications: 

• Experience with optics design and analysis software tools
• Experience with design and testing of AR/VR systems
• Experience with lens design and manufacturing
• Experience with ophthalmic devices

Salary/Pay Range:

For individuals hired to work in California, Science is required by law to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role.  We determine your level based on your interview performance and make an offer based on geo-located salary bands. The base salary range for this full-time position is $100,000 - $160,000 annually + equity + benefits. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. Please keep in mind that the equity portion of the offer is not included in these numbers.
