  • Master’s degree required; Doctoral degree optional.
  • Current PA licensure.      
  • BLS HCP, ACLS, and ATLS certifications are required.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Ortho-Trauma Physician Assistant (PA) provides care for patients who have experienced traumatic injuries while playing a crucial role in the assessment, stabilization, and management of trauma patients. These conditions may be addressed in the emergency department, trauma department, operating room, or patient unit. The PA may perform diagnostic and therapeutic tasks and procedures independently while collaborating with physician colleagues with appropriate credentialing for privileges. The PA will collect data and assess, diagnose, treat, and evaluate patients under their care, including rapid primary and secondary surveys to identify, manage, and prioritize interventions. The PA is responsible for patient advocacy in the medical care system, serving as an advisor and liaison between patients and physicians.

This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts, and demonstrating a commitment to teamwork and cooperation.

Depending on the discipline of the PA – appropriate state administrative codes and AtlantiCare Bylaws, Rules and Regulations will apply and could vary in that discipline (PA).

Duties may include:

  1. Assessment and Diagnosis: Evaluate patients with traumatic injuries, including fractures, dislocations, and soft tissue damage. This often involves physical examinations, imaging studies (like X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs), and diagnostic procedures.
  2. Surgical intervention collaboration with physicians.
  3. Preoperative and Postoperative Care: Develop and implement treatment plans before and after surgery, including pain management, infection prevention, and rehabilitation. Monitor patients' progress and adjust treatment as needed.
  4. Emergency Care: Respond to trauma cases in emergency settings, including acute injuries and emergency surgeries.
  5. Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work with other medical professionals such as orthopedic and trauma surgeons, emergency room physicians, anesthesiologists, physical therapists, rehabilitation specialists, and other APPs to provide comprehensive care.
  6. Patient Education: Inform patients and their families about the nature of the injuries, surgical procedures, and rehabilitation processes.
  7. Trauma Team Participation: Actively participate in meetings and case discussions to ensure coordinated care and optimal outcomes for trauma patients.
  8. Documentation and Reporting: Keep accurate, complete medical records.
  9. Comply with Policies and Procedures
  10. Quality Improvement and Education: Engage in quality improvement initiatives to enhance trauma care practices including teaching and training programs for medical students, residents, and other healthcare professionals.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION: Master’s degree required. Completion of an accredited physician assistant (associate) program is also required. Doctoral degrees are optional.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION: The candidate must be board-certified as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant and licensed by the State of New Jersey. The candidate must also be credentialed as an allied health practitioner with AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in accordance with the Medical Staff Bylaws.                                      

EXPERIENCE: Experience preferred, but will train novice. Proficiency in clinical applications is preferred at the time of hire.

PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

Demonstrates leadership, operational, and clinical competencies as established by the Assessment and Evaluation Tool for this position.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Potential for exposure to the hazards and risks of the hospital environment, including exposure to infectious disease, blood-borne pathogens, hazardous substances, and potential injury.
  • Extensive standing and walking, including stairs.
  • Lifting approximately 25–50 pounds frequently.
  • Lifting approximately 50–100 pounds with assistance occasionally.
