About the Role

Trackman I

Play a vital role in the construction, maintenance, repairs, and dismantles of track and the appurtenances thereto including right-of-way maintenance as required.

Responsibilities

• Trackmen are also responsible for loading and unloading of materials from vehicles or work trains
• Handling ballast; clearing brush and debris from the right-of-way;
• Handling and installing cross ties and switch timbers, rails, guard rails, spikes, and other fasteners such as switch materials, tie plates, rail anchors, and joint bars.
• Working conditions may include railroad, tunnel and outdoor environments in close proximity to active railroad tracks.

PATH operates 24 hours per day/7days per week/365 days per year. Employees are required to work weekends, holidays, atypical hours (evening and midnight shifts) and during inclement weather conditions. Incumbents may be subjected to mandatory overtime at the beginning or end of their scheduled tour, or on their days off. A union seniority system dictates work schedules for jobs represented by one of PATH's unions, and time off may not be immediately available during the usual summer and holiday periods. Working conditions will be challenging, including but not limited to inclement weather, direct contact with the public, in tunnel and outside areas during active train service, and an industrial environment. Commitment to attendance is expected and required.

Employees are subject to drug and alcohol testing, including but not limited to pre-employment testing, reasonable suspicion testing and federally mandated random testing for certain titles. A violation of PATH's rules prohibiting use, possession or influence of drugs and alcohol while on the job is a terminable offense.

Minimum Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
• One-year experience in heavy construction maintenance and electrical repairs
• Valid Driver's License

Desired Qualifications

• Trackmen must be able to carry and use such tools as: spike mauls, claw bars, lining bars, track jacks, air and gasoline tramping guns, jackhammers, and other tools normally associated with track work and other right-of-way maintenance.
• Knowledge and experience with hand tools and powers tools.
• Ability to work rotating shifts (am, pm, midnight, weekends and holidays).

Selection Process

Thanks for your interest in the PATH Trackman I position. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey will be hiring candidates during our recruitment event the week of 6/17/24. Our selection process will move very quickly. If you meet the basic requirements and are interested in moving forward, your first few steps are outlined below.

• Register to take the written exam at a testing site using the link that will be provided. Candidates will need to take the exam by Friday June 7, 2024 and there is a $25 fee to take the written exam. Testing sites are open 7 days a week.
• Candidates who pass the test, will be contacted by a Port Authority Recruiter and will be scheduled for an hour-long interview the week of June 17, 2024.

The most qualified candidates that pass the interview will be contacted and will be advanced to our background check and medical exam

The starting salary for the PATH Trackman position is: $26.69 hourly. Trackman I are eligible for annual step increases (subject to collective bargaining agreement.
