UKCEH is looking for an experienced Peatland Remote Sensing Scientist to join our 600-strong team, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.

You will be joining our Wetlands, Grasslands and Croplands team, based in Bangor, North Wales at the edge of the beautiful Snowdonia National Park. Applying your remote sensing expertise to develop our understanding of peatlands, croplands, and coastal habitats such as saltmarshes and sand dunes.
You'll be contributing to an exciting range of projects with global reach, taking responsibility for specific tasks, to develop links between remote sensing and ground-based measurements. Additionally, you’ll be communicating the value of your science and UKCEH’s work, both internally and externally. There will be opportunities to develop your research, expanding your skills to manage projects within the broader field, and leading on scientific papers and reports.
Current projects the group are working on include: paludiculture and wetter farming trials on peatlands, mapping peatland surface motion, mapping saltmarsh extent change and urban green infrastructure.

Your main responsibilities will include:

Developing remote sensing techniques for peatlands and other habitats, to build a body of work that is a recognisable, sustained contribution to the advancement of your area of science

Manipulating and analysing large spatial datasets
-
Designing and implementing field experiments, to link ground and remote sensing measurements from various ecosystems
-
Contributing to reports and scientific papers, including as lead author
-
Occasional fieldwork within the UK
-
Contributing to the writing of funding proposals
For the role of Peatland Remote Sensing Scientist, we’re looking for somebody who has:
-
A PhD (in a related science discipline) or equivalent relevant experience
-
Experience in using large spatial datasets, manipulating data, statistical analysis using R, Python, Arc GIS or similar
-
Experience in analysing a range of Earth Observation data, for example using Google Earth Engine
-
Ecological understanding of key plant and soil processes
-
Experience in communicating activities and outcomes to a range of audiences, with the ability to build good working relationships with key stakeholders

Experience of fieldwork and data collection in peatlands or other habitats
-
The ability to translate technical concepts and provide specialist guidance and advice to others

A full UK (manual) driving licence – please confirm on your CV
