Job Description

Primary Purpose

The Advanced Practice Provider (APP)—which includes Physician Assistants—plays a vital role in Parkland’s mission to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care. In this position you will provide direct health care to patients in designated primary or specialty areas, including comprehensive assessment, diagnosis, treatment, education, and referrals. You will also serve as a clinical resource and role model, supporting evidence-based practice, training, evaluation, and direct oversight of practitioners and students across the service line to ensure the highest standards of care. In partnership with leadership, you will help assess, plan, organize, and implement initiatives that enhance APP practice, quality, and outcomes.

Minimum Qualifications

Physician Assistant (PA):

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
  • Successful completion of an accredited Physician Assistant Program recognized by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA) or its predecessors.

Experience (for all APPs):

  • Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience as an APP performing similar duties.
  • 5 or more years of clinical experience as an APP in any field preferred.

Licensure / Certification Requirements

All APPs:

  • Current BLS for Healthcare Providers certification from the American Heart Association, the American Red Cross, or the Military Training Network.

Physician Assistant:

  • Current, valid PA licensure from the Texas Board of Physician Assistants.
  • Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Demonstrates proficiency in providing care to assigned patient populations in compliance with the Texas Nursing Practice Act or Texas Medical Board Rules, Parkland protocols, and clinical standards.
  • Exhibits strong leadership abilities, superior clinical skills, and serves as a resource for practice development.
  • Communicates effectively in writing and verbally with patients, families, and team members.
  • Demonstrates motivation, recruitment, retention, and change-management skills to support a high-functioning team.
  • Maintains a thorough knowledge of Parkland’s policies, procedures, structure, and mission.
  • Models patient-centered behaviors and upholds Parkland’s ICARE values.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive clinical services in the designated specialty area, including obtaining histories, performing physical exams, ordering diagnostic tests, making assessments, establishing diagnoses, and developing evidence-based care plans.
  • Document all findings, treatment plans, and recommendations accurately and concisely. Manage time effectively to optimize patient and provider resources.
  • Consult and collaborate with supervising physicians and other specialists, referring patients when appropriate to ensure continuity and quality of care.
  • Involve patients and families in planning care and educate them to promote self-management, adherence, and follow-up. Develop patient-friendly education materials and arrange appropriate follow-up appointments.
  • Participate in community outreach and educational activities to enhance patient engagement and promote Parkland as a patient-centered provider.
  • Train, supervise, and evaluate APP students, residents, interns, and other healthcare trainees. Serve as a clinical resource and role model for allied health professionals and junior staff.
  • Stay current with developments, trends, and best practices in your field through continuing education, workshops, and active participation in professional organizations. Integrate new knowledge and techniques into practice and share skills with the healthcare team.
  • Collaborate and maintain positive working relationships across all Parkland staff to ensure excellent customer service and patient satisfaction.
  • Maintain knowledge of and compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, policies, and accreditation requirements. Develop internal controls to support compliance and maintain current professional certifications and licensure.
  • Complete assigned corporate compliance modules and annual obligations promptly. Seek guidance as necessary to ensure full understanding of requirements.
  • Identify opportunities to improve departmental workflows, effectiveness, and efficiency. Recommend and help implement changes that align with Parkland’s strategic goals.
  • Participate in quality assurance and quality improvement (QA/QI) projects, clinical research, and clinical drug trials as appropriate.
  • Assist leadership in developing, implementing, and monitoring annual goals and objectives for the department. Attend regular staff meetings and serve on multidisciplinary committees as assigned.
