Responsible for designing, developing, and implementing software solutions that meet business needs.

Works on more complex, less clearly-defined software projects under limited supervision. Applies a full understanding of established systems software development principles and best practices to analyze complex issues. Updates or modifies working methods in their own role/work area without the benefit of defined procedures.

Principal Application Engineers are expected to have a high level of knowledge of domain technologies, platforms and systems software development principles and best practices to independently resolve problems and make major changes to existing processes/systems.

How You'll Do It

  • Creates technology solutions addressing high impact business priorities. Demonstrates the ability to analyze, design, code, test and deploy solutions and product features with high quality to production. Level of technical expertise enables solutions with high complexity and depth.
  • Competent in multiple technical domains, including programming languages, security, automation, testing, and business domains. As a result, is the go-to person for many people outside of their team.
  • Participates in strategic technology decisions and understands how these decisions impact Discover as a whole.
  • Proactively identifies and mitigates issues based on intuition and experience in multiple domains. Is a thought leader amongst team members and drives problem solving to determine root cause.
  • Coaches technology communities at Discover in areas of specific technology domain, design-thinking, agile software development way of working, security, architecture and/or data engineering.

Qualifications You'll Need

The Basics

  • Bachelors degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related
  • 6+ years of experience in Information Technology (Software), Engineering, or related
  • Internal applicants only: technical proficiency rating of Proficient on the Dreyfus engineering scale

Physical And Cognitive Requirements

  • Primarily remain in a stationary position.
  • No required movement about the work environment to complete the major responsibilities of the job.
  • Primarily performed indoors in an office setting.
  • Ability to operate office equipment such as but not limited to computer, telephone, printer, and calculator.
  • Ability to communicate verbally.; Ability to communicate in written form.

Bonus Points If You Have

  • At least 4 years of Tandem HP-NonStop development experience, including Application UI, workflows, notifications, SLAs and Service Catalog forms
  • Experience with design, development, deployment, and maintenance of software using TAL, pTAL, COBOL and Pathways
  • Ability to build or modify scripts using TACL and ENFORM
  • Experience with processing debit card payments
  • Experience in Connex switch development and maintenance
  • Good understanding of ISO8583 message format
  • Experinece in using Paragon, C2P or similar testing tools
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Advanced oral, written and presentation communications including the ability to present technical information in a way that non-technical audiences will understand
  • Experience with multiple ServiceNow platform products desired
  • Experience with Agile delivery methodologies

Compensation:
The base pay for this position generally ranges between $107,000.00 to $180,200.00. Additional incentives may be provided as part of a market competitive total compensation package. Factors, such as but not limited to, geographical location, relevant experience, education, and skill level may impact the pay for this position.
