About the role:
The team is looking for an experienced Principal Software Data Engineer who is experienced; with a strong foundation in data engineering technologies, including data processing frameworks (e.g., Apache Spark), databases (e.g., SQL and NoSQL databases), data warehousing, ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes, and data integration. In this role, you will collaborate with the Indexes Technology Leadership, Indexes Marketing Team, Scrum Master, business analysts, developers, designers, and QA to build technology solutions for Morningstar Indexes, primarily focusing designing and implementing APIs for client onboarding. Guiding build, design and delivery of additional APIs, data engineering, setting goals, and ensuring successful project execution. This role is a hands-on position, and a large portion of your time will be spent designing and developing solutions yourself, driving overall data model development life cycle from ideation to operations. Leading cloud scale development effort for Data Integration technology-enabled solutions that address the needs of Morningstar Indexes, including how to streamline design, automation, and orchestration of enterprise data that support business transformation and processes.
Job responsibilities:

  • Design and implement additional API libraries with complete user documentation.
  • Help implement data solutions that meet product requirements and quality needs with respect to functionality, performance, scalability, reliability, schedules, and adherence to Indexes goals and principles.
  • Define testing and acceptance criteria used by technology team during development of new processes, QA and new product launches.
  • Modernization of index data and services to scale index data operations processes.
  • Establish metrics (quality, delivery rate, etc.) to identify areas of opportunity, and work with teams to continuously improve.
  • Deliver solutions to effectively and efficiently manage index events to optimize client experience.
  • Oversee daily activity of security master reference and index data for current and financial platforms.
  • Be a role model to the team, collaborating on good designs & patterns. Reinforce good development practices like test driven development, and continuous integration.
  • Introduce improved data development practices, innovative frameworks, and technology solutions that help the team move faster.
  • Follow best practices like estimation, planning, reporting, and improvement in everyday work, and foster an atmosphere of experimentation and continuous learning.


Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience Index Data Engineering.
  • Completed bachelor's degree in computer science, Economics, Engineering or equivalent.
  • Subject matter expert on Capital Market domain (Indexes, Equities, etc.)
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills with attention to detail.
  • Able to contribute to global projects coordinating with global operations teams, working across different time zones.
  • Hands on experience with SQL and/or NoSQL databases (preferably PostgreSQL, DynamoDB).
  • Experience with modern development practices in areas of product design, requirement analysis, test driven development, and test automation.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new technologies.
  • Excellent listening, written, and verbal communication skills Data-driven approach and excellent analytical skills.
  • A collaborative approach to problem-solving and ideation in a highly ambiguous environment.
  • Ability to operate cross-functionally, leading and influencing, and ultimately leading to timely tactical decision-making to advance our objectives.


Nice to have:

  • Knowledge of backend database systems (SQL and no-SQL)
  • Knowledge of Python, C#.
  • Knowledge of backend index operations functions and processing systems.
